Niki Lauda won the Belgian Grand Prix in 1976 and Gunnar Nilsson won it in 1977. What became of the trophy? Gunnar on the podium is shown being awarded flowers.

Is that one of the trophies that Niki Lauda (reportedly) gave to his local garage in exchange for free car washes?

There was a trophy there when Mario won the following year:

656-EF262-D970-49-C9-9-F68-0-F267-DDA470

and Pironi definitely got hold of it in 1980:

Niki appears to be brandishing the same trophy in 1976:

FA0-E47-DD-2719-47-D2-841-E-1-E593925-C1

but obviously passed it on to the team member fairly rapidly:

54-ECB150-EA52-4-A13-9037-B07-A52136277.

I'm sure Carlos got french fries in lieu of a trophy, the beer was for flushing'em down.

So, perhaps in 1976 Mr. Magnetti Marelli borrowed the trophy for a while! (Someone told us his name a while back, but I've forgotten again)

I was there at Zolder in 1976, my first GP outside the UK, delighted to see Ferrari win. James Hunt retired in front of us, oil splattered all over his rear wing mount, leaking, I think, from the McLaren gearbox. James' championship hopes were in tatters, or so we thought......

Thank you all for answers. I was wondering what happened because a trophy for Gunnar for his only win would have been something. He got flowers.

An urban myth - I stopped at the "local garage" in question and the trophies were mostly for skiing!

I am sure there would have been a large dollop of mayonnaise on the frits.

In all seriousness, it appears that the Spa winners got flowers and a trophy so perhaps the photo of Nillson caught him after he was given the flowers and before he got his hands on the trophy.
Was this a perpetual trophy?  If so Gunnar would have had to give it back.  Sometimes trophy winners would have been given a replica - but not in the case of some of the elaborate examples of the silversmith's skill.

Were there not a thread within the last year, where someone posted picture or link to pictures of the trophies on shelfs in that local garage?

I've read an article from Autocar in 1977 and it explained that the Zolder trophy was never found.  Gunnar had flowers.
