Welcome!

As is the tradition in the boring off-season part of the year we have ourselves a little competition for who can design the best racing livery. And that term can really mean a lot of different things. We've had everything here - from stunning designs that would surely become fan-favourites if implemented in the real world, to comedic wonders forever remembered in the forum folklore. And this year we're celebrating that diversity by splitting the contest into two (equal) awards. That's right, we'll have two winners instead of one.

How will that work? In the first phase nothing will change. Your task is as always to try and come up with the best idea and make it a reality. Well, in this case by reality we mean pixels on the screen. Just create whatever you want within the rules (more on that later). The change will come in the voting process, where everyone who votes will be asked to pick two sets of winners instead of just one. These will not have a definitive split or definition. There will be some guidelines but in the end the voters will decide for themselves where their favourites fit best. One is meant to be a Serious Business award, by which I mean a livery that could really appear on a racing car, although not necessarily realistic in the aspect of sponsorship and things like that. The second will be more of a Comedy/Creative award, where anything goes and you can show off your wit and comedic genius. Once again - one is not more important than the other and in the end we'll have two equal winners.

And the big award for winning the competition will be, as always, the honourable task of hosting the next edition. This time it means that our two winners will have to cooperate or simply decide between themselves which one will take on that work. Both will gain a place in our hall of fame alongside all the previous winners.

hall-of-fame-v2.png

In order to not make things even more complicated, we're going back to just one template. Sorry Indy fans, but this is for the best. We will be using the good old F1 template originally created by BWT long time ago and modified many times over the years as the F1 cars changed shape. For this year's iteration I made some tweaks myself and here is the result.

template-jpg.jpg

The template is available in .jpg and .png format so just pick whichever suits you. You are of course free to use any kind of software and technique in your creation process. If I might suggest, use of advanced lighting and shading is mostly discouraged - the ideas should be more important than professional execution, let's keep it relatively simple. It's not a strict rule but we want to keep the competition open to most people regardless of their graphic skills.

If you can, please save your entry as a file with dimensions of at least 1200px on the longer side. For uploading your results I personally recommend https://postimages.org/ as it's simple and has a good record of long-term file storage but obviously anything will do.

No competition is complete without some rules. This isn't some high-stakes game so things are not very strict unless they stray too far from the good will and friendly spirit, but please keep these in mind.

  • Only images created using the template provided above will be entered in the voting process.
  • Please try to avoid modifying the template. An exception can be made for small details.
  • Don't copy already existing racing liveries - this includes ones from outside of F1. Of course the distinction between copying and adapting or being inspired by something can be blurry but do try to make it your own design as much as possible.
  • If some dispute can't be resolved by other means, forum moderators will have the final say.

One last serious organizational thing is the schedule.

  • Entry submission is open until March 14th (end at midnight GMT)
  • Voting process will take place between March 15th and 27th (end at midnight GMT)
  • The final results will be announced on March 28th

On the final note I'd like to encourage people to enter. This competition is not reserved just for those with serious graphic skills, we're trying to keep it open and accessible to everyone. So don't worry if you're not a photoshop master, it's the ideas that count for most here.

Ah, it's an odd-numbered year, which means I need to come up with something to be the runner-up again this year.

Looking forward to see what entries we get for this edition!

I don't mind that.

I'm more concerned about the livery not being an original idea. It's the 1989 Benetton with the same colors rearranged. We could accept it as a valid entry but just not vote for it, if we feel it's not within the spirit of the rules.

Come to think of it, it's not even RA2's unoriginal idea. It was mine!

Thanks Jcbc3- the 2023 UK Government funded F1 team car, after Covid 19 rendered F1 too expensive for all but the most despotic world governments. This was found decaying in an abandoned fish market, and still bears the contemporary Government slogans of the time- along with sponsorship of Rich Energy, whose CEO was related to a top Government minister.

I agree with the others - the background is not a problem (although for future attempts I would recommend doing a better job at obscuring the actual F1 car underneath  :p ) but the livery itself is too close to the Benetton, sorry  :|

This year's template is easier to edit, as there are fewer artifacts than last years'. Thanks, Anja.

It's not too easy to do with MSPaint this year, uh? it's got those annoying shades of white that make it difficult to "paint this whole area"

I'm sorry, I skipped the 2018-2019 fad when everyone became graphic designer

Then you need a much more higher resolution PNG file to make it work.

I guess I missed the part where Boris Johnson tried to overthrow democracy.

Anyway, I think political entries, and Trump entries in particular, should be automatically disqualified, for lack of imagination and poor taste is nothing else.

Well I've gone through no end of drafts. It seems every new car launch made me change course... anyway, I'm putting the fininshing touches on my entry though.

Whilst working on it today, I started wondering (not that its a part of the competition rules) - but I'm wondering - what are the actual rules for name placement on the cars? It seems that most have them on the headrest, below where the halo joins. Is that actially mandated by the FIA or do the teams have some leeway on that?

Are there even any regulations for that? I thought it's pretty much up to the teams.

Formula One Sporting Regulations: https://www.fia.com/..._2020-04-07.pdf

Article 9.3: "The name or the emblem of the make of the car must appear on the front of the nose of the car and in either case be at least 25mm in its largest dimension. The name of the driver must appear on the external bodywork and be clearly legible."
