Scotty Beckett working on Jerry Hansen's Lola T 140 in 1968

It is with great sadness that we have to report that Scotty Beckett took his final checkers last Thursday, March 4, 2021. He was 83 years old.

Scotty began racing in 1959 with an Allard J2X Le Mans, nicknamed the Lo-Test Special. He was a regular around the Midwest and especially at Road America, often co-driving the Birdcage Maseratis of his friend Don Skogmo. Later on, Scotty raced Skogmo's Genie Mk 8 as well. His final race came in 1967, when he took the Genie to victory at the Southport Regional. Scotty also helped Jerry Hansen with his Formula A effort.

Our sincere condolences go to Ginny, his wife of almost 60 years, and his many friends.

The officials wouldn't let him out of the pits and Scotty is telling them it is perfectly safe and a Great idea to ride around the track with Jerry Hansen.

Scott-Ginny-2.jpg

Scott Beckett and Ginny at her 80th Birthday Party

This comes from Ginny Beckett, Scotty's wife of almost 60 years.

"Scott was diagnosed with Pneumonia, a serious bacterial infection in his left lung and a sudden onset of Atrial Fibrillation.
He was in I.C.U. for 14 days, had lung surgery to try to repair.    His body couldn’t fight this last battle.
I was blessed to be able to be with him every day and the last nights.  I’m ever grateful for that.
We would have celebrated 60 years together this coming June.   He was the love of my life."

Scotty Beckett and the Lo Test Allard

The Lo-Test Special started life as an Allard J2X Le Mans, in which Scotty installed a Max Balchowsky developed Buick engine.

Here Scotty tells the story how he got the engine for the Lo-Test Special

The race at which Beckett is pictured was the inaugural race at the Lynndale Farms circuit in Pewaukee, Wisconsin. It was the end of August, 1963.It was not an SCCA race, but rather a club race put on by the MIdwestern Council of Sports Car Clubs.  It had a small turnout with Beckett winning overall in this car. Second was Augie Pabst,

supporting his local region, driving a Formula Junior Brabham BT-2. The little Junior harried Beckett the entire way, and Scott barely beat him.

The Costin Lister belonged to Pete Harrison, who had Art Huttinger as co-driver. The Porsche was an RS-61 shared by Bob Holbert and Chuck Cassel.

Thanks Tom for the explanation on the above post.

Close friends: Don Skogmo and Scot Beckett, with Scotty in the Birdcage/Ford, chassis 2467. Based on the background, most likely Road America in 1963.

LeMans start with cars lined up for what I believe is the 1963 Nassau Race

It looks as though Scotty's Birdcage is positioned in between two other Ford-engined entries:

#198 Shelby Cobra driven by Frank Gardner
# 84  The former Harrison Special driven by Charlie Kolb.

Man-and-Engine.jpg

Scotty Beckett working on the Ford engine in his Birdcage at the 1963 Nassau Races

Ginny Beckett remembers the Nassau races this way.

I think I attended  Speed Week two times. !!

Here we go. ------------

Yes, I did join Scott and Donny/Georgia and others from the LOL region in Nassau for race week on two occasions.

I believe it was 1963 and 1965.

Scott raced the Birdcage.   The week was out of a movie set.   The pits were wide open, it seemed to me, including waiters donned in black trousers, crisp white jackets and white gloves taking orders for and delivering lovely island concoctions.  ( alcohol included) !! Not for the drivers of course.

This was a major shift from what a pit area looked like in the US during the hours spent in the pits at Road America etc. completing lap charts under strict rules.

The evenings were lovely.   Beautiful cocktail parties with most everyone attending, sharing conversations with racers and their guests from around the world.   A great opportunity to have a global experience while on a small island.   Lovely.

The largest event of the week, from a social point of view was the Bahamas Automobile Club hosted, Motor Ball, under the patronage of His Excellency The Governor and Lady Stapledon one of the years.

I too recall Sir Sidney Oakes arriving at the Ball at just the correct moment one of the years.  This was a long gown event and ever so much fun.

Some of our days were spent at the track, the women that is, other days at the beach.   On an off day we went out sailing and snorkeling.    One year we stayed at the Montagu Beach Hotel where the Ball was held, the next year at the Balmoral Beach Club.

A quick, I think funny story.     Scott and Donny Skogmo had a red panel truck shipped over with the race cars.    When it came time to go out in the evening this was our transportation if taxis weren’t available.   The men took all of the equipment out of the back of the truck and set up folding chairs for we women to sit in on the way to the evenings event.   It was so hysterical to pull up to the main entrance of the hotel hosting the event, Donny and Scott would get out of the front seats and come to the back of the panel truck, open the back doors and help we women out of the truck in our cocktail attire.   Quite a sit, made us laugh each evening.

AS you know it was a Le Mans start,  Scott driving a right hand drive and the person to his right, unfortunately for both of them was driving a left hand drive car.   The start was a stitch for both of them.  Wish I could remember who it was, you would recognize his name.  In any case, they both rushed across the track toward their cars, arrived and both realized one of them had to acquiesce to the other.   Scott described the other driver as presenting Scott with a deep gentlemanly bow, and arm slung forward stating “ you first” and off they went.   A bit of time lost but a lifetime memory of fun.

Enough about my memories, thanks for asking.   It’s been a bit of a trip down that wonderful memory lane for me.

Sure wish Scott was here to be the one sharing these stories in person.   I guess he is speaking through me right now.

The fenders have been cut out to allow the use of wider Halibrand wheels.

The "Scared?" sign is still a mystery, since it was a word never in Scotty's vocabulary. In the background are "Black" Jack Baker's wife Hale, with their Black Jack Special.

The track location is unknown, but by 1965 the car was sold to Chuck Haines of St. Louis.
