Confirmed by the BRDC. Terrible, terrible news. He was, is, and always will be THE voice of Formula 1. Criminal that he was never made Sir Murray Walker.

RIP

That’s genuinely really sad. He’s what got me so into F1 in the mid 90’s.

RIP. What a wonderful man.

A long life lived well and a legacy of enthusiasm that will outlast him for generations to come. People discovering the history of the sport through old race broadcasts will keep his voice alive for years and years and years.

Rest well, sir. And a thank you from every F1 fan who has heard your commentary.

The voice of F1... What awful news

As said above, he must have had one of the best lives enjoying his passion and sharing his enthusiasm with us all.

And now I’ll have to stop, as I’ve got a lump in my throat.

Thanks Murray.

Very sad. Rest in peace Murray, you were a legend.

Had the pleasure of meeting him twice. When he did a book signing tour for his autobiography and in the paddock at Thruxton for a BTCC meeting.

Murray Walker could commentate on paint drying on the wall and make it exciting and interesting.  RIP.

He was the best and it was a shame that the media drove him away from broadcasting 20 years ago.

For a huge number of British fans Murray Walker was the first voice of Formula One, and perhaps remains the classic commentator whenever you think of a Grand Prix. I was quite young when he was still regularly commentating, but my earliest memories of motorsport all involve Murray taking me through the action, telling me of the strange coloured cars and mysterious drivers engaging in heroics in front of a raptured kid.

I really don’t think it’s an exaggeration to say Murray’s love and enthusiasm played a part in bringing thousands of us into the sport.

Rip :(

RIP Murray. Not having grown up with his commentary, I only got to enjoy it relatively late through YouTube and F1TV, but he was such a fantastic ambassador for the sport. What a life, from growing up in the Georgian period through a World War to travelling the globe with the world‘s fastest circus, introducing millions of new fans to it to it in the process. The word legend barely does him justice.

Edit: I highly recommend listening to his Beyond the Grid episode – his mind was as sharp as ever, even at his advanced age. Some great stories in this.

😢 my first memory of F1 Murray sounding like he was on the end of a phone commentating on the 85 Monaco GP.

RIP

Very sad but he reached a grand old age.

Any clip of motorsport from back in the day that you replay in your head always has his commentary on it.

It's no exaggeration to say that Murray Walker played a massive part in the expansion of Formula One in English speaking nations. He was the gold standard of commentary and a voice that has never been replaced.

To me Murray was great because of his enthusiasm and the important ability to know he wasn't the story the action was. Becauase he knew he wasn't the story he became the story and became the legandary figure he is today. This isn't even factoring in his service during WW2 and his highly successful career as a Marketing executive.

Thank you Murray Walker.

He had a great run.

If there's racing wherever he is now, they've just gained a great commentator. Farewell Murray.

A legendary broadcaster with a unique voice, who imparted a sense of fun, gravity and wonder whatever his subject. An ambassador for motor racing whose career spanned the sport's transition from something that happened at a track to something that happened in your living room.

Anyway, no need to eulogize. For British fans of the right age he's like a member of the family.

RIP Murray. What a man of proporsions within our sport, what a voice. He is quite possibly the greatest of all the sporting commentators and has everything one of the greatest need - passion and charisma. The man's love for the sport is party of his blood.

A giant of F1.

Damn. Not entirely unexpected, given his age, but still sad news all the same.

I grew up in the 90s where he was the voice of motorsport, not just with F1, but touring cars too. I still have fond memories of pushing my toy cars around on the carpet, acting out my own races, to the sound of Murray commentating on TV.

RIP, Murray. Your voice will live on.

Someone posted in another thread recently that they hear his voice in all of their F1 memories, even if he wasn't actually the commentator at the time - surely there can be no greater tribute.

I’m not sure where you get that from. He was very clear in his book and elsewhere that the decision to stop commentating was his and on his own terms. And he frequently appeared on radio and tv for many years afterwards.

Oh that’s so sad. The voice of F1 and of my childhood as a F1 obsessive who was playing F1 games when I wasn’t watching races. His energy he put into his commentary was always so genuine.

RIP Murray Walker.
