I tried putting this query in Grand Prix Travelling, but I guess the participants are all in Covid lockdown as that place is more quiet than a medium size cemetery. So I thought I should try the same question here as I guess that some of the TNF forumites do visit the Silverstone Classic.

I am at present thinking of dropping my annual UK summer pilgrimage this year as they have moved the Flying Legends airshow from Duxford to Sywell. This leads me to think that the Silverstone classic might be a good substitute.

Here is the question though, for those of you who have been there.

Their website says that trains come no closer than either Milton Keynes, Northampton, or Banbury. From there it is bus towards the local villages near Silverstone. Can anyone give an insight into which of the three cities that can get me a bus the closest to Silverstone? Or even if there's better service from one or the other. I also have no problem hiking a couple of miles from any bus stop there might be.

I have tried googling the journey, but doesn't seem to get many answers. Is there really no public transport to such a large venue? In contrast to Goodwood that I'll visit in September which brings out an armada of buses on narrow, twisty roads every year.

It depends on where you are starting from, of course. Are you planning to stay overnight in the area? Bear in mind that weekend train services arriving at Banbury, for example, may not be frequent early in the morning.

Scheduled bus services are unlikely to be much use and will be busy. Local coach operators provide special services for some big events at Silverstone but your time at the circuit may be limited.

Traveline is your friend: https://www.traveline.info/

The two best options appear to be the X91 from Milton Keynes, which stops at the circuit entrance, or the 88 from Northampton, which serves Silverstone village. Both operated by Stagecoach Midlands. There's also service 87 from Northampton, which stops at the circuit as well, although at present there only seems to be one service each way on a Saturday and none on Sundays.

Buses will be on winter timetables at this time of year - they generally change in April or May, although whether there will be improvements is impossible to say. Might be worth trying to contact Stagecoach to see if they will be offering any special services for the Classic - it's often the case that one-off events are served by special buses; local to me First Bus always run a special service whenever there is horse racing at Bath, which otherwise hardly ever sees a bus!
