This video of her making the rest of the field look like easy mode AI in a video game is worth a watch:

She knew the exact amount of speed you could take into every corner and that's often where she found her advantage over the rest. Great throttle and car control too.

Her intimate knowledge of The Ring really stands out on the faster parts of the track. Great to watch.

Sincere condolences to her partner, family and colleagues. An award named after her or a corner at the Nurburgring would be nice.  http://speedqueens.b...hmitz-reck.html A good profile of her on Speedqueens.

Terribly sad news. Like many, I best remember her for, “I could do that time in a van.”

Rest in peace. :well:

What a racer, what a talented person and clearly a very supportive and kind soul.

When I think of the Nürburgring, I immediately think of her owning the track. She was the Nürburgring.

Extremely sad news to hear of her passing.

May her family and friends enjoy all of the happy memories they created together and may they receive all the love and support they deserve.

I miss her. But I am also thankful about what she gave us. Sabine was a real racing personality with unforgettable moments.

Damn. Didn't saw that one coming. So sad. She was more than a driver. She was symbol of the passion for that circuit. She was for all of us some kind of Nurburgring CEO (or Queen) and will be sadly missed. I remember seing a doc with her about her passion and i also remember she had a farm or something near the circuit. I hope she gets some corner named after her. It's the minimum for such beautiful dedication to the circuit and motorsports. RIP.

So sad to learn about this, she seemed like an amazing woman. In a small, specific way her name has become as synonymous with the Ring as Rosemeyer, Nuvolari and Stewart.

It’s particularly tragic that Germany has had so many motorsport heroes taken before their time, from Von Trips to Bellof, Schumacher and now Sabine Schmitz.

I'm in shock. Was just thinking about what she might be up to a few days ago. always loved her appearances on Top Gear. Godspeed Queen of Nurburgring.

:| . I did not even know she was battling an illness.

A wonderful, funny, and incredibly talented human being. A shining beacon of light for all of us.

Rest in Peace, Queen

Rest in peace, dear lady and racer.

She was the first example I showed to my daughter of a lady exceeding in motorsports.

What crappy news.  2021 is off to a horrible start.

At the very least, I think the Frikadelli Porsches will be racing for her memory this year.

RIP, SpeedBee! :(

I could not have said it any better.

She was inspiring and engaging, she will be missed.

Rest in peace.

BRG and KWSN-DWM have captured it -- the extraordinary thing about Sabine that was so transparent (beyond her technical skill and intuition on the track) was the sheer joy in doing what she did and doing it well -- whether shocking a Ring Taxi fare into begging for mercy, or making time against serious competition in the 24 hr race

What a marvelous person and life lived -- thank you and condolences to family and friends for their loss

She may have been a better bet for the DTM than superannuated and indifferent former F1 drivers or spouses of team bosses...

Have just  re-watched the Top Gear Transit van episode. An amazing performance in a totally unsuitable 'vehicle'. Just an amazing performance. RIP Sabine.

Other than her undeniable record at the 'Ring....what sticks in my memory is her utter joy at driving.

This was very moving to rewatch. Being able to stand back and say that no, there's no point to doing it again because you know you have already given it your absolute all, is something to aspire to.

I think the thumbnail image which tends to come up when that video is shared sums up her sheer unadulterated joy at driving better than any words. You can't fake that.

A lot of people want part of the Nürburgring circuit named after Sabine Schmitz.  No one deserves this honour more than Sabine.

Of the places not already named, which would be best?

I'm noting the left-hander from where drivers turn from GP circuit to Nordschleife.

At the bottom of the article, Sabine was asked about her favourite part of the circuit.  It would be fitting to choose a part she enjoyed.  They could rename the whole circuit after her - "Sabine's Green Hell". Who would object?  You've only got to see how many YouTube videos about Sabine that have been posted in the last few days to realise just how highly regarded she was.

Her passing was front line news in the US, she embodied racing, the sheer joy of racing, and her sheer joy in racing - This thread show much we all were touched by her, and for some possibly in ways we did not realize.

It is not often that I cry when a famous person dies, but with Sabine I almost did.  German people have a bad rep in Europe, especially that they are taciturn and with little humor. Sabine always charmed me because she was so cheerful and a bit mischievous. She always reminded me of my German aunts, who had the same kind of laughing and teasing. And who are all dead, also from cancer, way before Sabine. So you can imagine that understanding Sabine had died also, the same way, feels a bit like being strangled oh so slightly.

Top Gear are airing a special episode for Sabine featuring current and former hosts.

Really glad about the former hosts part. I feared politics might get in the way of a proper tribute but that won't be the case. It's on iPlayer this evening and broadcast on BBC 1 this Wednesday.

iPlayer link for those who can watch it. Hopefully it's made available to everyone somehow.

Emotional and very frustrating that someone with so much energy and pure joy for life was taken from us. She illustrated how life can be lived to the full.

Any chance of a translation for non German speakers like myself?

Did anyone see this? At the recent Nurburgring 24Hour race, the winning Manthey Racing Porsche carried Schmitz’s name, first initial and a German flag alongside the other members of the team’s driving crew. https://sportscar365...ace-notebook-7/

YouTube will translate for you ...

1. Click on the "Settings" gear icon

2. From the menu, turn on the subtitles (German)

3. Examine the menu again - "Auto-translate" will appear

Unfortunately, what it produces is usually complete nonsense!

The first corner of the Nordschleife will be officially renamed the Sabine-Schmitz-Kurve at a ceremony on the 11th of September.
