I have always admired Rowan Atkinson, and his enthusiasm for the sport is longstanding and genuine. I remember seeing him at least 30 years ago at Cadwell Park in a Renault Five race and his unpretentious enjoyment of the sport impresses . I was at an AMOC club meeting at Croft when he was racing the plug ugly Aston V8 Zagato - I noticed his McLaren F1 parked up in the paddock, covered in road filth and dead flies and with sandwich wrappings and a newspaper strewn over the passenger seats. That's the way to enjoy a car like that - and yes , I do remember it didn't end well for his F1 ....

A proper petrolhead! I did feel, though, that his portrayal of Birkin was - ahem - a little wide of the mark.

Here's a cracking film about Rowan Atkinson's relationship with the car. The Driven Man:
Here's the Tim Birkin drama too. Why was his depiction wrong?

I remember watching that documentary "The Driven Man".....because he played rugby like I did, running in the opposite direction to where the ball was going ..and daydreaming of driving and racing cars... So, we are kindred spirits....
