Is there a repository of information on Rain Affected Races from, say 1980 to 2020 IN FORMULA ONE?  I performed a search but couldn't find anything definitive.

If there isn't one, could we pull together our respective memories and create one?  Thanks for the help!!

Edit: Thanks for the clarification request, ARTGP!

races that were shortened due to rain? Or any race at all that endured so much as a spritz?

And are we talking about a particular series?

How would you define a rain affected race? There have been so many races (especially recent times) where it rained a few drops but that's all it was. Or maybe it was damp at the start but everyone started on slicks.

If you require that intermediate tires or full wets were used, then you could try to find tyre strategy statistics for each GP. Though I'm not aware of any site that lists tyre choices from the beginning of 1980s.

Statsf1.com gives a general info of what the weather was like during each race but you need to check one race at a time. I know no better sources. Also what "rain affected" means will be always up to debate (and therefore the info on statsf1.com may not be exactly what you wish)..

I saw a stat last week - "LH has won 60% of the rain affected races he has raced in" ..... and I wondered what the source for that was .... as I have no idea of anyone keeping a register of rain affected races.

1981 was a very wet season - it even rained in the Monaco tunnel.

The Complete Encyclopedia of Formula One has weather information among the race results. Bruce Jones was/is the author, so perhaps the info comes from Autosport race reports.

1984 Monaco GP: "Cool with heavy rain"
1991 Brazilian GP: "Warm and dull, wet later on"
1995 Japanese GP: "Cool and damp, drying later"

Sometimes it differs from the weather in Autocourse annuals:
1988 British GP: "Cool and wet" vs "Cloudy, cool, intermittent rain"

Can't find any weather info in the databases at Formula1.com or FIA.com though.

Forix records the weather conditions for Grand Prix races, apparently going back to 1950. However possibly not in the detail you'd like: for instance the 1993 South African GP is listed as dry, which is the best one-word description for it but omits the fact that the track was underwater by the last lap.

Rando question: I've got a memory of the 2003 Australian GP being affected by rain but did it actually rain during the race? Or was it just damp at the beginning.

Not enough for wet tyres.  Started raining on lap 15/16 but only for a few laps.  Schumachers's lead went from around 11s to 3s in a handful of laps.

Suzuka 2000 is a case in point. Rain falling probably made the difference in one of the most famous title deciding races of all time, but given no wet tyres were used it is never counted as a "wet" race.

I've been composing one so might as well share my full, "binary" (as in: one lap of wet track = wet race) list of wet Grandes Epreuves - sources: several websites concerning the pre-WW II racing history, mainly the kolumbus website; the list on f1metrics; and....wikipedia.

2004 Brazilian GP started on damp track and mostly on intermediates.

2007 there was no race at Suzuka, Japanese GP was at Fuji.

According to this list (unless I miscounted) Hamilton has won 42.42% of the rain affected races he's started (14/33).

He won 4 of his 21 first wet races and has since won 10/12.

Looking at that long list, off the top of my head I'd add Monaco 1982 (briefly - ask Prost) and Imola 1993.

Also I think there were a few drops of rain at Monaco 1985, and it rained a bit at Magny Cours 1995 as well I think. Monaco 2012 was a race where it ended raining a bit which added to the tension but I don't think anyone pitted.

With Merc winning roughly 75% of all races, that they win wet races at a big rate as well is to no surprise. ;)

Again proves the old times were better cliche. Over the last 10 years we are down to under two wet races over a 20 race season, in the 90's it was 3 out of 16.

And yeah it's no surprise that Hamilton won that many considering his win rate at Mercedes. Hamilton really proved himself as a great wet weather driver in the early McLaren days, his 2008 Monaco and Silverstone wins are the ones I remember the best. Turkey 2020 as third.

So since 1986 we always had at least 1 wet GP each year? Interesting

Yes, although I don't think the sprinkles that affected the 1987 Detroit GP amounted to much.

For the non-championship races, the 1981 South African GP was wet for a while so you can add that one in.

If 1 wet lap = a wet race then Portimao 2020 was wet.

Ham won that one as well!  :D

Also need to add the 1974 Race of Champions. I was there and got thoroughly soaked. This was the race where Ickx famously passed Lauda around the outside at Paddock Hill Bend.

Thanks for the notes and corrections, keep them coming! Not counting Monaco races in 1985 / 2012 as wet races - or at least I can't remember whether the actual rain in those 2 races caused any incidents or made people switch their tyres?

If we count the WDC races only Ascari has the highest winning percentage, 80%  (4 out of 5), but considering he spent 4 of those 5 races in a rather dominant car, I'm sure a more comprehensive assessment of his prowess in the wet weather could be made if weather information of the non-championship F1 races was more available than in my poor records from the 40's and the fifties.

Senna raced 23 wet races and won 14 of them. Makes his wet weather winning percentage 60%.
