I am assuming all this dust is being created due to the fresh tyres they all took on tearing up the surface?
The tires are hard, the cars are heavy and the suspension travel isn’t optimum for dirt.

Yeah, I remember seeing it then and thinking it wasn't getting much care. Then I tuned in a few minutes ago, and wow.

Yep, and (for the uninitiated out there) in a closed stadium like Bristol, it's harder for the air to move the dust out. At the smaller dirt tracks you're always praying for the wind to be blowing away from the stands. If it is, great. If not, not so great. But the wind, if there is any, won't make as much difference at Bristol.

I'd dearly love to see these guys run on dirt with cars built for dirt. As it is now, they look like they're tiptoe-ing (I have no idea how to spell that) through the turns.

And the dirt is back for next year's spring race , with the new car...
I wonder if they'll have windscreens? Or build special cars without them?
Posted 29 March 2021 - 22:51
I guess if they are running more dirt races then they will probably start to optimise the cars a bit for dirt.
That's exactly what I'm thinking.

It seemed entertaining, no?¿
A bit... strange. I'd rather watch the Super DIRT series than this.
And I was genuinely a lot more entertained by F1 yesterday.

Yeah, y'all please don't take this as a good representation of dirt oval racing.

So let's hear it one more time
Awesome

For one who honestly have never watched any dirt track racing, and only knowledge is a dirt track racing game for 10+ years ago (and NASCAR Dirt to Daytona). Listening to all the talk about this being so unique and special, how it was a completely different skillset and so on. It was quite meh to see mostly the same guys as normal at the top...
Posted 30 March 2021 - 02:01
Suarez and Stenhouse aren’t usually up front. Reddick and Eric Jones aren’t usually top 10. Busch and Harvick quite a bit back from normal.

I doubt we’ll see many mods to the cars for the race next year. It would be cheaper for them to go to Bloomquist, Richards or Labonte and buy a dirt super late. You can get a new slm roller less drive train and shocks for $30-50k. It will easy cost the teams that much to design and mod a couple of cars. Plus Nascar deciding on some sort of rules.
My guess is modified front body work like the finally allowed them to do with the splitter and some sort modified cooling system arrangement.

Yes, that's the time to start thinking about making the car work on dirt!

This race sounds kinda funny, if not a "great advert for NASCAR", to borrow a phrase our soccer commentators use nonstop.
I thought with racing on dirt if they couldn't junk the stages and go the whole hog with heats, last chance qualifiers, and B- and A-mains.

For someone who repeatedly claims to have a broad interest in motor racing, I find this statement baffling.

Well, driver is factor too. If my driver is not in the mix for high places then interest drop.
But I think it was this track also. Dirt is not in Nascar nature (I mean these cars are not made for that), didn't settled for me

Fair enough.
I watched the highlights, the dust had nowhere to go because of the huge amphitheater, just looked bloody dangerous at times.

Racers gonna race. It was the same back in the day. You'd see more of a difference in Champcar but even then if you had a race with Foyt and Andretti and Al Unser in it you'd put your money on those three.
I thought the optics were fantastic, the cars looked difficult to drive and far more rugged and roadcar-y than on pavement.

The combination of the glare of the sun and the dust was pretty bad, maybe wouldn't be *so* bad at night?

Using a shorter race format such as heats etc would also allow NASCAR to keep on top of the dust and tyre issues as well.

So if Bristol is going dirt again in the spring, does this mean they will just leave the dirt there over the winter? Or are they going to remove it all and then relay it again?
No idea of the cost but it seemed like a huge effort just for one race, maybe it was always envisaged that this wasn't going to be a one off (baring any major issues/mishaps with it)...
Posted 30 March 2021 - 10:34

Depending on the dirt it’s not usually that dusty. There was talk on the radio broadcast that when watered then dried this clay was dusty. It would have been dusty stadium or not. They had heavy cars and hard tires. Once the tires tore through the slick off they kicked up dust until it packed back down. Because the cars can’t back in and float through the corner they displace more energy in a more concentrated area. Those worn tires were in part due to drivers hanging it out in the turns. Given the car geometry the dirt racers probably didn’t have an advantage.

I fell asleep halfway through as it was 1am Transylvania time and I was feeling blissful.
Logano sucks, but this race didn't. I think it earned another try.

Truex has barely raced on dirt. But he won Stage 1, was 4th in Stage 2, and he was 3rd with two to go before having a tire issue that relegated him to 19th. He also led the most laps: 126 of them. Not bad bad for a dirt novice. I'm quite impressed.
Also, Saurez' run was impressive too.
Posted 31 March 2021 - 07:33
To be fair, the two dirt ringers took each other out, so the race was almost doomed to be won by a dirt novice.

Yeah, this is a great point. Wanna race on dirt? Do it the way the dirt racers do. Hopefully, they learned a lot from this first run.

When was the last Consolation race in NASCAR Cup? Sometime in the mid-1980s?
