Mexican GP

Max .................. 9.5

Lewis ................ 9.0

Checo ............... 8.5

*** Didn't really see enough of the rest of the bunch. From the sounds of it Kimi, Seb and Fernando had quite a battle and probably deserve a good score. Charles, Carlos, and Lando seemed to have clean races. The rest no idea.

I said earlier that I'd give a 8 for a performance that's expected. Higher than 8 for performances better than expected and lower than 8 for performances worse than expected. Let's say we expect Bottas to finish 10 seconds behind Hamilton in the wet. Hamilton is one of the best, maybe the best wet driver ever in F1. I think it's silly to rate Bottas lower than Hamilton just because he finished behind him. So I'd rate Bottas a 9 if he finished 5 seconds behind Hamilton and a 7 if he finished 15 seconds behind Hamilton.  This is the basic explanation of my rating strategy. I also take the race circumstances in account.

Would you also give Hamilton a 9 then on that day? Or an 8 because that's expected of him. I would disagree if Bottas could get a higher score while finishing behind his teammate except for the most extreme circumstances. (Bottas starting from the back and finished P2 in the wet, while Hamilton wins from pole).

I would disagree if Bottas could get a higher score while finishing behind his teammate (That is unless Bottas started from the back of the grid in the wet, and had a storming drive to P2, ahead of Verstappen while Hamilton won from pole).

I don't rate a driver that finished behind his teammate higher than the teammate. Unless Hamilton made (small) mistakes in the race. It's a difficult one because you don't know if Bottas performed better than usually or Hamilton worse than usually. Thankfully there are race circumstances (safety car, bad pitstop, weather change) which make rating easier

The converging lines of the Verstappen and Hamilton graphs are just symbolic for this season, it's gonna be decided at the end. Looks like they're on course to hit each other  :p

How on earth did Lewis and Max score equally in Abu Dhabi? Lewis basically drove away from Max for the entire race! Even in the opening stint, when on a harder compound tyre. If anything Checo deserves the higher Red Bill score for his Herculean effort to take 7s out of Hamilton, but Hamilton was pretty flawless in the final 4 GP.

Maybe Lewis had a slightly better race car?

Yeah, Max did an incredible job on Saturday, to start P1 ahead of Hamilton, not sure everyone realizes that.. This is what Mercedes top guy Kallenius(!) wrote to Marko on Sunday:

“May the best Racer win! What Max showed yesterday was unique. That was a round for eternity, what he put there.”

I think Lewis had excellent pace and was driving great, but I did find him a bit too cautious with Perez and Max. So you could hold that against him. It was also quite apparent that the Merc race pace was just unbeatable as it had been the last 4 races.

Only thing Max really did wrong was fluff the start, other than that he too was flawless. Both of his overtaking moves were excellent.

Top 10 looks a fair reflection of the season.  Could quibble with a score here or there (i. the Silverstone and Monza ratings of Verstappen and Hamilton) but nothing that would change the order of anybody.

Yuki needs more AD like performances next season.  Seemed promising at first, but was a major disappointment.  He won't have Honda in his corner anymore.
