I can definitely confirm that it's not a Ferrari 312PB!

Is that a Frazer Nash badge on #11?

I'd say the first one is MG based, and number 11 a special bodied Riley.

#7 is a LHD with a (Ford?) V8 badge on the bonnet. The mixture of license plates could possibly point to Scandinavia?

Plate issued in Luton. Two headlight masks indicates the photos are September 1941 or later.

Danish plate on the mystery car? Norwegian on the Porsche 356?

If the no. 7 number plate is Danish, which by colour it could be, then A 740 is from the block issued (until 1958) by Roskilde...and without the eye-on-hand symbol it would be from 1950 or after.

113 NK looks to be a trade plate, because there's a regular plate hidden by the dumbirons.  FJH 3?  JH would be Hertfordshire.

Heh, checking on the MOT database, it actually has a record for FJH 3; issued to a red MG just before the war started.  Like one week before.  There's nothing for FJH 8, EJH 3, or EJH 8, which are possibles.

It's a Nobe-Sport built by Swede Gustav Nobelius in 1954, the plates are Swedish trade plates, the ones on the Porsche looks like regular Swedish plates.

The location is could be Gellerasen outside Karlskoga during "Kanonloppet" in 1955.

The car had a long chequered history as a Ford V8 special, starting in Norway : https://kustomrama.com/wiki/GB1 (check out the ice racing wheels!)

The Trade plate's NK and the car's JH are Hertfordshire. Luton was Bedfordshire and it was only after a post-war reshuffle that it gained a Registration office and numberplate letters.

In his working diaries for 1971, my father was at the opening of a new banch of Bristyol Street Motors.

"One could see at a glance that this was a top motor trade function, for in the car park were five Rolls-Royce Silver Shadows, a 6.3 Mercedes 300SEL, an Aston Martin DBS and T.C. (Cuth) Harrison's Ferrari Daytona. Oh, and a visiting helicopter. Cuth Harrison told me he is now taking life very easily and if he goes to his office, he leaves after lunch - which, he reckons, he is entitled to do "as I'm now drawing my old age pension". And to think I first met him as a wild young man tearing down the hill at Donington three parts out of control in his home-built Ford V8 racer."

Now wondering if that might have been No. 11?

I think Harrison's 'home-built Ford V8 racer' was one of the pre-WW2 Allard Specials?

Drifting OT, although hopefully adding to the registration discussion, here is a bit more number plate history. I grew up in Tring with NK, AR, JH, KX and BH plates all around. Prior to 1974 the first three were Hertfordshire, while KX and BH were Buckinghamshire.  After 1974, NK, KX and BH were allocated to Luton, in neighbouring Bedfordshire, and AR to Chelmsford, just over the East Herts border.  For some reason JH, in 1974, was allocated to Reading.

Interesting, Richard, that the NK trade plate was issued in Luton when that 'code' remained with Hertfordshire until 1974. Wartime arrangements presumably.

On reflection, I may have been thinking of Ken Hutchison, who ran a Lincoln-engined Allard.

I thought so too. Harrison raced a Ford special at Donington in 1934, but it was an 8hp, not a V8!

Does this help at all Doug?

Research provided by Chester, my MG Car Club colleague up here in Cheshire. Not the same, but similar.

Well, as Monaco Motors were based in Watford that would certainly fit with a Hertfordshire registration.

If FJH 3 is indeed the number, then according to the MGCC T Register, entry number 5292, it's a TB with 'special' bodywork, c/n TB0313, engine no XPAG 547 and currently lives in Switzerland.

Thank you John - I’m sincerely quite touched!

I was quite prolific many years ago - alas all my photos are gone, including me in a rented Nissan Micra CC driving the Monza banking...

Did I ever mention that? ;-)

My Father had the Nobe as payment for some work during its Norwegian period. He found that the reason for its incurable stopping after a short time was due to the SU fuel pumps being mounted 90 degrees wrong, if I remember correctly. The car at that time has Ardun cylinder heads on the Ford V8.

Father disposed of the engine, and then the car was towed to a farm outside of Oslo, where he intended to store it in one of the farm buildings. At age 15, I was entrusted with sitting in the Nobe Special and steering it while being towed, feeling like Bill Spear at Le Mans in a Cunningham...sitting more on the car than in it. Unfortunately, it disappeared from storage after a few weeks. Nothing was heard from it, until some years later it appeared at an Oslo Motor Show, having been made into a drag racer.

The 356 does have Swedish plates, and the photo definitely looks like it was taken at the Gelleraasbanan, at Karlskoga in Sweden.

Did your father claim it back?

No, I believe he could not be bothered. The car would not have been worth much at that time, anyway.

GPL-GG-289.jpg

I stumbled upon this thread and was somewhat surprised this image has not yet been 'identified'.

This is a Riley Special that was driven in this form by Cuth Harrison in 1948 and by Gordon Shillito from 1949 to the early 50's. Chassis number 22T 1916.

The image has to be Gordon Shillito at the 1949 Blandford Trophy on the 27th of August. Shillito actually won this event.

Albeit the race being called after 18 laps when Jack Fairman, who battled for the win with Shillito, had a violent crash in which he broke his arm...
