I think that's fair. After all, although the F1 bit is unquestionably the aspect of the organisation with the highest profile and widest reach, the FIA's total remit is vast. The ability to effectively run such a sprawling empire seems key.

As ever, most people on this forum forget this and focus just on F1 - one little race series with just 20 competitors.  A bit like the inability of many to understand that this is the Racing Comments Forum, not the Formula One Forum.  I would prefer someone with NO connection with any part of F1 to be the next President.

Maybe Ari Vatenen will stand again!  HE would get my vote  - if I had one.  But he is probably not corrupt enough to buy sufficient votes.

I've yet to see Todt do anything as self-serving, short-sighted and greedy as selling the commercial rights of the sport away to his mate for 100 years for a knock-down price. We've still got 80 years of that deal left to go, by the way. None of us will live to see the end of it.

That deal hasn't stopped the commercial rights being sold to Liberty. So I'm pretty sure we have seen the end of it. Bernie certainly isn't relevant today.

Was it Bernie or the FIA that sold the rights to Liberty? AFAIA they bought the remaining years of the original deal.

Does it matter? The deal clearly doesn't mean all that much.

Of course it does. The FIA, or rather Max, sold off the rights cheap as chips, and Bernie has reaped the benefits. That crooked deal hasn't been null and voided with the passage of time.

The root problem of F1 or the root problem of this forum? ;)

Careful with that axe Eugene.

Of course I don't. It was a nice little earner for an unpaid position.

that's surely because most people on here are mainly interested in what the FIA means for F1.  It's not that people have forgotten, necessarily. E.G. it's possible Todt has done great things across the FIA as a whole (and to be fair I have heard positive safety related things), but as far as F1 is concerned I think he's been an unmitigated disaster.

Having someone with no connection wouldn't necessarily be bad, but it might certainly help F1 if the person had a good understanding of what it needs.  OTOH, Todt should have understood it very well and look what he gave us.  But the FIA has a huge influence in how F1 is run, so of course people here will focus on that

You have just highlighted the other 'problem' with this forum.  People think that the President of the FIA runs everything himself like an absolute monarch.

In the days of the unlamented Balestre and the wretched Mosley, this was indeed often the case, but Todt has returned things to how they should be.by keeping his sticky fingers OUT of all the everyday business  F1 is run by the F1 Commission and if you think things have gone wrong, blame them.

It's not really a problem with the forum.  As I tried to explain, people are naturally discussing with a view as to what impact the FIA president might have on F1, regardless of what other responsibilities the president might have. And it's not as though the forum will be influencing anybody's voting patterns.  If you see that as a problem that's of course up to you, but I doubt many here would agree.

And given that Todt was instrumental in driving though the change to hybrid power on the grounds of "road relevance," I would also strongly disagree that he's been keeping his sticky hands out of everyday business.  He was largely responsible for the direction that F1 has taken over the last decade. And by responsible I mean "to blame."
