He's back!!!

MotoGP's 28-year-old, love-him-and-hate-him, 82-time Grand Prix winning, six-time world champion Marc Marquez is back to match himself against MotoGP's other 21 riders. What we know for certain is that Qatar was the last we'll see of Stefan Bradl, at least for a while. What we don't know for certain is how well Marc will do, or far that matter, how the other 21 will do against him. In 2019 Marquez won 12 Grands Prix from 19, in 2020 he won 0 from 1. Time, events and Sunday will tell us.

The MotoGP folks, and their wee friends in Moto2 and Moto3, are racing this weekend at the lovely Portimao circuit near Faro in the Algarve. If you know as little about Portuguese geography as me, you may be interested to know that the Algarve is on the southern tip of Portugal, adjacent to Andalusia, whereas Estoril is further north near Lisbon and the Atlantic coast. The circuit was built at great expense in 2008, apparently with the express aim of taking Estoril's place as Portugal's main racing circuit. They even had their own World Supersport racing team to promote(?) the circuit, which gave a number of riders including current Moto2 championship leader Sam Lowes a breakthrough in international competition. 2008 was probably the wrong time to build something really expensive, and the track had to be bailed out by the Portuguese state investmnet fund, but their efforts eventually paid off because when MotoGP was forced to return to Portugal last year in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic, did they turn to lovely, homely, historic Estoril? No they did not.

Untitled-design-72-1.jpg

The track itself? Not universally loved but it has a nice blend of ups, downs, fasts and slows. I dislike the track because it's the place where Noriyuki Haga's last and best world championship challenge crashed and burned in 2009. It hosted last year's MotoGP season finale, which will mostly be remembered for a dominant victory not in front of the home fans by KTM's Miguel Oliveira, and a first Grand Prix win for the second-generation Remy Gardner (how many second-generation wins have there been?) Four MotoGP manufacturers filled out the top 5 places, with championship-drunk Suzuki and Aprilia missing out. Last round at Qatar was pretty much a straight Yamaha vs Ducati contest so for the rest, Portugal ought to be a welcome reset.

IMG_6788.jpg

When's it all going down? Here's the schedule. Because Portimao is in Portugal, the race is on exactly the same time zone as the UK, which for some reason, probably due to mornings being cold, means that the MotoGP race comes before the Moto2 one.

Friday, 16 April

9am-9.40: Moto3 FP1
9.55-10.40: MotoGP FP1
10.55-11.35: Moto2 FP1
1.15pm-1.55: Moto3 FP2
2.10-2.55: MotoGP FP2
3.10-3.50: Moto2 FP2

Saturday, 17 April
9am-9.40: Moto3 FP3
9.55-10.40: MotoGP FP3
10.55-11.35: Moto2 FP3
12.35pm-1.15: Moto3 qualifying
1.30-2: MotoGP FP4
2.10-2.50: MotoGP qualifying
3.10-3.50: Moto2 qualifying

Sunday, 18 April
9am-9.20: Moto3 warm-up
9.30-9.50: MotoGP warm-up
10-10.20: Moto2 warm-up
11.20: Moto3 race
1pm: MotoGP race
2.30: Moto2 race

So there we have it. Activity begins tomorrow. It's much too early to talk about championship standings, but for the record, Marquez starts 40 points in the hole. Doable.

Can't wait to see what Marc can do.
All eyes on him.

And also this is one of the most spectacular tracks on calendar, even if not the easiest one for overtakes.

Also will Oliveira be as strong as in the 2020 event?

Seriously though, isn't this normal when MotoGP and F1 is racing the same weekends, that MotoGP is scheduled to not end up in a timing conflict with F1?

Some rednecks from California managed to be father-son 500cc champions.

Oh yeah, them. Shame Kenny's mechanical, two-wheeler child never won any races. Came close.

I don't think so: MotoGP is still on at the usual time of 1pm UK time / 2pm Western Europe time, which of course isn't a direct clash with F1.

The wide, downhill, three-apex last corner at Portimao is really cool.

Early days but considering the limited testing he has had... seems pretty much on pace !

Marc is back, if anyone had doubts on his performance... FP1 P3, and taking risks when the track had patches of humidity...

No long runs to speak of but Marc looks like he hasn't forgotten how to go fast. Espargaro fourth as well, so things are really looking up for Honda.

He's not lost anything has he? That's great news, for all I've enjoyed the craziness of the last season and a bit. Interesting and not totally surprising to see it lifting Pol up a notch too.

Only FP1, but still.

I would imagine he's only gonna gain speed from here onwards. Very bad news for everyone else in the grid, it's the old Marquez that's back.

Last year's pole was a high 38 though, we're still far from the ultimate pace.

I'm sure a part of them will miss the opportunity to win every week, but the true competitors will want to measure themselves against the best. Joan Mir has said that he felt his championship was a little devalued by its long-term owner losing it by default.

We still had damp track in some places and some guys didn't try to go bull blast. And then there's the question of how much is he going to feel pain/tiredness during the weekend

The track conditions were far from ideal, they lapped like 3 seconds over the Record pace.

Let's see when it's time to really push.

But so far, incredible stuff by Marquez, i was stunned.

My #93 animosity apprehension is starting to bubble; I just pray that this dude's mindset and racing ethics have matured through this last year.

Anyways, the Algarve is stunning and I adore this circuit. Gonna entirely enjoy every moment of these bikes here.

Last lap by Marquez was edge of the seat stuff, some big risks

https://twitter.com/...057562564763652

Sixth overall,
Pol Espargaro only 13th

GOAT intensifies

Bagnaia leads FP2

Yamaha Petronas just imploded. That's mysterious.
Last season, Morbidelli was fighting for the win against Oliveira.

I have followed MotoGP since the 1998. In that time I think I have the longest streak of anyone in wrongly assessing and predicting the racing of any fan ever. Latest, that I thought that Honda was so far back, that EVEN IF, Marc was back in form, he would have a hard time putting the Honda anywhere near the top.

Early days, only practice 1, but damn Marc

Looking good for Suzuki, expected more from KTM (although Miguel is looking strong, his quick run was with a used Hard front).

But what the hell is going on at Petronas?

His mindset is one of the things that make him probably the greatest rider of all times. If anything, let's hope its intact.

Marc straight into Q2, impressive stuff. WAs never gonna be anything else realistically but it's still good to see. I think. Isn't it? Yeah, maybe. I guess.

Let's not forget that for marc:
He is in a new track (he only rode here with the street RC213 some weeks ago)
He is riding with Bradl's setup
It is the first time he rides the 2021 honda

Marquez smiling and sliding all over the place, if any of the other riders weren't worried yet they will be now.

Speaking of worries, as beautiful and flowing as this track is, is it just me or does it also feel like an accident waiting to happen, in places?

I am still perplexed on how Fraser Rogers is on the NTS. He isn’t a name that immediately comes to mind from British Superstock... guess he was super available. Good for him.

Kinda was hoping someone like Nagashima would be a super sub so you could judge the NTS.

Marc being Marc.

I can't say I'm exactly surprised, he's insanely talented.

If he's top 5 already its only going to get worse for the competition, as he is going to get better every race weekend from hereout.

I feel at this point he just needs a solid top 5 to bag some points.

Marquez says he felt better in FP1. Arm tired in FP2, just muscle. Rest of weekend will depend on "how I get up tomorrow", ie will arm be better or worse? Will have to change his style if the arm does lack strength. Said his final FP2 lap was full of mistakes & felt slow

Fabio looks on it, but Vinales could be reverting to type and having one of those weekends where he doesn't have a good feeling with the bike.

Marc says his arm feels tired and his lap was full of mistakes, but is still only a tenth off his team-mate.

We need a separate Marq cam, at this rate.

I really did not miss these mind games. Typical.

Edit: I cannot believe how MotoGP keeps generating an endless sea of drama.

I have a feeling Marquez is going to fade in the race tomorrow. That arm doesn't look 100% at all. Still seems to be in some pain.

Speaking of feelings, I feel we're witnessing Rossi's last season. I don't see why Yamaha would wish to keep him, even if he wanted to continue.
