My memories of Ayrton - thirty eight years ago!
MACAU GRAND PRIX, 1983:
1. West Surrey Racing/Theodore/Marlboro
Line up: Martin Brundle, Ayrton Senna, Roberto Guerrero
(behind: Jo Ramirez, Dick Bennetts, Eddie Jordan, Sid Taylor and very smart drinks shop)
2. This was the evening before race day. (That afternoon, had coffee with Dick Bennetts and Ayrton and I had a lesson in proper pronunciation of his name. And so it happened that he always recognised and acknowledged me when paths crossed later)
3. After this, a couple of the boys went to a nightclub. Davy Jones (below) spiked Senna's orange juice with vodka. Mauricio Gugelmin, his best friend in UK, in the next hotel room, had to listen to Senna throwing up all night.
The offender, Davy Jones.
4. Senna had to catch a rickshaw to the pits on race day and looked like death warmed up - could barely walk.
5. However, he managed to win both heats and the Grand Prix very easily! (more celebrations below)
My favourite: No motorhomes in those days - you had to sit on the floor…….
6. Other faces that wonderful year:
Martin Brundle and father
The pride of New Zealand (Murray Taylor)
Very baby-faced Tommy Byrne
David Hunt
7. and in the evenings! :
Vern Schuppan teaching us all how not to use chopsticks
Emanuele Pirro, Jan Lammers at play in the Hotel Lisboa
Pirro, Eddie Jordan, Teddy Yip (Slim Borgudd at the back)
……….
8. And for the post-race party on Teddy’s balcony:
Jo Ramirez and Ayrton start eating … not for long
Soon Ayrton is grabbed by Roberto, Jo, Martin (and Katy Guerrero):
not sure the waiters were impressed..
This goes to show that once upon a time, people enjoyed themselves!
9. A couple of others:
Not particularly happy-looking Touring Car entries (Stuck, Quester - I think all BMW drivers)
Macau Bridge, in Prawns:
Don’t mention the “ciggies” !
Murray Walker at play!
E.J., Roberto Guerrero and Murray Walker

I'm just someone who spent many years as part of the motor sport family and luckily for all the memories, before iPhones and snaps that are often lost forever, I wielded my camera wherever I went - so have about 20 albums of photos, of varying standards. Since discovering this forum recently, I realise it's a great place to get some of these seen - it means hours of scanning and trying to remember some of the dates, but probably worth it. I spent many years at the Macau GP, so the opportunity to take photos of various personalities 'at play' was great. Thank you Tim for all your great help
Thank you so much Sue. Great pictures.
