Bill Whittington, on of the trio of brothers who are the only brothers to qualify in the same Indy 500, died in a plane crash earlier.  He was 71 years of age.

The Whittington saga is one of the most interesting in all of motorsports and deserves it's own movie or series.  Clearly one of the most interesting families in motorsports.

RIP, Bill and condolences to your family.

Going that way in a plane crash.  That’s almost some sort of bizarre irony.

Indeed.  After all they saw and went through, it certainly is ironic to die in that fashion.

I really hope someone does make a biopic of the Whittington brothers.

Condolences to Bill's family and friends.

At least some of his family were as guilty as he was...

Robin Miller's obit seems to hint that he may have attempted a Covid PPE scam as his latest chapter of being a career criminal. But he drove a racecar once so we'll genuflect.

But it's OK - Randy Lanier (a fellow convicted smuggler) says Bill loved Christ, so all the racketeering, rendition, and fraudulent behavior is forgiven!

My understanding was he got a contract but didn’t deliver so the contract was cancelled with no payment.  The top of the pandemic and PPE scams were widespread.  He did do a bit not too long ago for tax evasion with regards to his kid’s resort in Colorado.

Like it or not, that is entirely possible.

A good friend of mine wonders if it was a "crash."  His friend he was taking for the ride was terminal  (with cancer) and had lost his pilot's license  and Bill may have known he was about to be caught in another "project."  Going out in a blaze of glory??????

But he has to ask, right?

(Look at me breaking my own no-theology-on-the-forum rule.)

Unsurprisingly, I don't like it.  Hypocrisy isn't religious, or at least it shouldn't be.

Let’s not forget the fact that you need a market to justify any illicit trade. Millions of folks wanted/needed to smoke a joint in the 60/70’s. They filled a BIG need. The recent reforms show just how much the governments misguided attempt failed. Just like alcohol probation failed. Unlike John Paul Jr, Bills personality prevented him from being forgiven for his sins. All I know is from what I experienced growing up in Florida and exspecialy the events surrounding Daytona and Sebring. IMSA/NASCAR would kill to recapture those times times again. I can sit back today and remember fondly watching the fire belching 934/935’s consume the old back stretch at Sebring as the sunset over big bend. Thanks Bill for the ride.

I think rehabilitation and paying one's debt to society is an important consideration for those who have been inside.  E.g. John Paul Jr.  But it's less a factor if they go right back to fraud.  E.g. Bill Whittington.
