Carlos Reutemann, a 12-time grand prix winner, is in intensive care in his native Argentina after being hospitalized with internal bleeding.
Reutemann (pictured above after winning the British GP in 1978) was admitted to a private hospital in Santa Fe on Thursday with what a medical bulletin described as “a hemorrhage of the digestive system,” with tests to be carried out. There has been no further update as to the outcome of those tests or the ongoing condition of the 79-year-old, but doctors have ruled out coronavirus.

@PeterDWindsor

Thinking of my dear friend, Carlos Reutemann, who is critically ill in hospital in Argentina.  Great driver, great human being.

I first heard of Carlos Reutemann in a Michel Vaillant comic. His name was just so exotic....

I hope he pulls through....F1 needs its elder statesmen.

Very literally in Carlos' case.

Carlos Reutemann, 3rd in his very first Formula 1 race, with McLaren M7C, "Ecurie Bonnier" (Jo Bonnier's team). It was the 1971 Argentine Grand Prix, a Non-Championship race. After a debut like this, he had a promising future in Formula 1. I hope he get well soon.

Another great feat is taking pole in his championship race debut at his home Grand Prix in 1972 in a Brabham BT34.

I think Mario Andretti and Jacques Villeneuve are still the only others to achieve that.

I was cheering for him back in 1978 when he was fighting the all mighty Lotuses, which was an impossible task. I was also cheering for him in 1981 in his inglorious fight against his team trying to become champion. Alas, it was not to be. What a disappointing race in Las Vegas…

I am cheering for him again now.

Yeah, statistically there also were a few in the early 50’s because they made their official F1 debut as ‘modern’ F1 started in 1950, but we really shouldn’t count these. Mario and Carlos did it both at their home GP.

Yes, you are right.

Lole's daughter Cora has tweeted that his condition, while still critical, at least hasn't worsened today.

I remember his steely gaze as a young man watching races and wishing I had that level of concentration.

Get well, Carlos. We still need you.

I read an interview with AJ where he downplayed the significance of his tiff w/ CR.  And more than one article seemed to intimate that the bigger beef was between CR and FW/PH.

El Globo reported:

El Lole (79) was admitted to an intensive care in Santa Fe last week suffering bleeding in the digestive tract, though he was lucid and talking. There were no failures of other organs. The situation was under control, but on Friday, worsened with new bleedings and hemodynamic decompensation, in addition to a drop in his blood pressure.

He was then moved to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at hospital Sanatório Parque in Rosario. Reutemann had another hemorrhage (gastric bleeding) on Monday, undergoing endoscopic hemostasis, a procedure designed to treat bleeding in the region. He is now recovering well from this procedure to which he was subjected on Tuesday.

He is in battle against liver cancer since 2017.

Reports from Argentina suggest that Carlos Reutemann, 79, is once again not well, having improved over the past weeks. Our thoughts are with the great man, who we all hope gets well soon. Pic: Ferrari 312T3, Monaco, ’78, en route to emphatic pole position, 0.5sec up on the rest.
