It feels rarely a true benefit to the driver causing the red flag as it usually results in a rough ride for the car which could lead to unreliability/retirement from the grand prix.
Car took some clattering over the gravel!

But damage is allowed to be repaired before the race without penalty

While it seems unlikely his mechanics congratulated George on the brilliance of his supposed strategy.

True but damage isn't always visible or discovered until it goes wrong

I guess it could simply be treated as any other impeding and be dealt with accordingly within the current set of rules.

Unless, of course, your team is Ferrari at Monaco.

I don't think many felt that Russel belonged among the top 3 that was interviewed after the Q, not even Russel himself. That should be an indication that a change would be appreciated my a majority.

Did it make a difference today? Seemed like the track conditions were getting worse at a sufficient pace that 20s of extra rain put a (magnificently driven) Haas on pole, so was anyone really improving on lap 2?

PER was purple in S1 on lap 2, so I guess lap 3 (for the others) would have been still ok.

Do you think Russell was taking extra risk because he knew he'd be protected by a red flag? If you don't think that, then your point is, I suggest, irrelevant.

No one knows exactly what George was doing except George himself. However there is certainly incentive for a driver of a certain unsporting calibre, such as Schumacher and Rosberg, to intentionally cause a red flag or at the very least even if the driver isn’t unsporting like that, if they’re put in a decent banker lap to at least take more risk at certain places in the track than they otherwise would knowing that at best they improve on their time and at worst, they go off and lock in the place in the standings.

I don’t think George did that today because he could have just as easily hit the wall, but I think it would be good if they just bring in a blanket rule to delete the fastest time if a driver causes a red flag.

It's weird that a small track limits "violation" gets a lap time deleted, or slightly impeding a driver on a fast lap can get a grid penalty. Running out of fuel during qualifying gets you sent to the back, especially if you can't get back to the pits, but causing a red flag has zero consequences, and the driver's best time stands.

I think it would be quite fair that the driver's fastest time in that session is deleted. If his next best time is still good enough to keep his position, that's also fair enough then.

I love the IndyCar way:
Iirc
1) Timing line few corners before pit entry, reducing the inlap to a few corners
2) Cause a yellow: best time deleted
3) Cause a red: 2 best times deleted and forbidden to resume in that session.

Please, make it happen.

But as it is IndyCar, F1 cannot copy that and admit that another series have done something better/smarter.

So it looks like Sergio Pérez crashed on purpose to bring out the red flag in qualifying in Monaco earlier this year. It's currently being discussed in this thread: https://forums.autos...admitted-to-it/

Laptime should be deleted
