Dear all,

 

I came across a sidecar racer of the name Bill Lomas and his passenger Conrad Money. In some race entry lists (programs) they are listed as racing BMW 492 cc sidecar outfits in the late 1960s. Sometimes they used Norton.

 

Can anyone of you please tell me wo they are/were and what exactly was their engine (pushrod or bevel shaft Rennsport)? The capacity of 492 cc indicates that this might have been a Rennsport, compared to the 498 cc of the pushrod model if not overbored.

 

Does that Bill Lomas have any relation to the solo rider Bill Lomas?

In previous years he had ridden in the TT with different machines (well at least engines) and other passengers

As far as I can see, he was no relation to the Bill Lomas

However, I think the Bill Lomas was actually W A Lomas which, if so, was not W E Lomas.

 

As far as I can see, there is only one Conrad Money; he lives in the Oldham district according to the electoral register.

TT database - interesting, but totally wrong - Bill Lomas the GP solo racer retired in 1957 after a racing accident curtailed his career.

 

He did write a book which is still available

Yes, "the" Bill Lomas was W. A., while the sidecar racer was W. E Sadly, I don't have anything more specific on the BMW, but would expect it to have been an RS.

So far I have listed more than 5000 (yes indeed) race entries linked to BMW Rennsport (postwar) sidecar plus more than 900 in the solo class. But I did not find any race report or photo that would tell the story of a W.E. Lomas on a BMW Rennsport.

 

Maybe you can find a piece in a contemporary British magazine?

 

My findings:

22 Aug 1971: Silverstone

29 Aug 1971: Snetterton.

 

Probably there are more race entries of Lomas-Money.

The Silverstone program from August 1971 has Bill Lomas and Conrad Money from Oldham on a 492 BMW

The home town of Oldham ties up with post from Geoff E that there is a Conrad Money on the Oldham electoral register - so you should be able to find his address and contact him.

The fairing covers the engine so that we cannot exactly see what kind of BMW engine it was.

 

In the program it says 498 cc which would be for the push rod modell
