We've heard news from his nephew Mark that Dave "Lucy" Luckett died suddenly on Saturday 12th. The incident on the startline at Zolder 1981 was beamed to millions of people but Dave's career spanned Shadow, Arrows, Leyton House, Lola, Simtek and Highcroft Racing. Don Nichols also employed him to restore his collection.

Sincere condolences to his mother Iris, other members of the Luckett family and to friends and colleagues.

Damn....of course I remember watching that awful incident at Zolder but also realising it was Luckett who was chief mechanic at Leyton House/March a decade later.

Condolences to his friends and family.

Whilst this sudden news is a terrible shame, we should be thankful we enjoyed 30 years more of Dave. Poor Giovanni Amadeo was not so lucky.

All of this just reinforces again how important it is to get people's memories down whilst they still can. Although this is the fourth contributor to Darren and Kev's Tom Pryce book to have died in about 8 months, at least they managed to get contributions in the first place. One day, it'll be too late.

RIP

  Yes, sorry, but I think this was more denial that this was so long ago than abysmal maths.

To witness the accident of Zolder ...., relieved he survived, great to see him later at Leyton House.

Yes you're right Richard. Nigel Mansell was distraught and thought Dave was dead. Wonder how it weighed on Carlos Reutemann's mind as he won that race.

I worked with him in the late 90's. He was a master at his craft and an absolute gentleman. Godspeed, Dave.

We at Racing Spirit hope to do a written tribute to Dave with as many of his colleagues contributing. If you want to contribute, here's our office: http://autotradition.co.uk/ Sad news indeed.

Can anyone confirm that he was David Leslie Luckett (b. 1949 Witney, Oxfordshire)? (Just my guess.)

Almost certainly. He was, according to an old post here about the Zolder incident, 32 years old at the time
