Watership Down is in Hampshire isn't it? Those famous rabbits ignored all wide open downland fields and ended up digging their new home in a bank alongside a wooded track, about 200 yards beyond the hairpin left on to the crest of the hill. A track that was part of the route of the 1968 South Bucks Motor Club Rising Sun and August Moon Rally....Shame I can't post the photo.

 

Seriously, rabbits build in cover and normally only forage in more open areas. Most holes we encounter here in open fields are dug by exercising dogs for fun or badgers digging for grubs. There was one lone young rabbit a few years ago that decided to begin a new underground network beneath the corner of my garage...

 

That Brands field in 1968 was rough (as if it had been ploughed in the not too distant past before returning to grassland) and muddy.

Or maybe it was a highly-trained sabotage team of Silverstone hares..?

Were there no moles to pass on any intel to ATC ? They afterall provide the foundations for many a hill  :drunk:
