One-time sponsor of Team Lotus, 1979-81, David Thieme was a fairly ostentatious character in his square glasses and black cowboy hat.

But it's just struck me that I never really learnt how to pronounce his surname. (I can manage 'David' fine...)

So can anyone give the definitive pronunciation please?

Is it Thime?, or Theme?, or Time? or Team? If it is the latter, wanting to sponsor Lotus sort of makes more sense.

Not necessarily a wise assumption. Thieme is American by birth, but has lived in Europe for decades. Based on his self presentation, he could be a Dav-vid, a Daf-vid, a Dar-fid...

How is David Thieme's name pronounced?

Wrongly. Same as most names in international sport. cf Gram Eel, Carlos Payss, Robert Cubikka, and Horgay de Bag Ration.

Sir David Thieme, pronounced Daffodil Crysanthemum. A rare flower, indeed...

...or Muck Ellwood as I heard a French commentator say once.

Jiles Wil-nyoove was an LBC regular. Some years later, Jake took over.

True, but that name is pronounced Throatwobbler Mangrove, as we all know.   ;)

Teasing the French for dodgy pronunciation of British drivers' names is dangerous territory, given that we also excel at the sport. :) :  Alleyne Prost, Françoise Cevey, Patrick Depallier.....

And anyway, Grarm Eel is so much easier to say than the real thing!

(When young I used to wander around singing to myself 'Nino Vaccarella, José Juncadella....Nino Vaccarella, José Juncadella', oblivious of the fact that, pronounced properly, they don't really rhyme.)

Fair point, but what are you referring-to as the usual, incorrect pronounciation?

"TEEM"  !

Can you confirm that , as I suspect, you had this straight from the man himself?

NBC's commentators - particularly Paul Tracy - are coming up with some interesting variations on Romain Grosjean's name.

I had a lecturer at Uni called Jacques Grosjean. He was French, but he’d given up on trying to get the British to pronounce his name properly and so he himself had taken to pronouncing it Groz-jeen.

I too had a lecturer named Grosjean, but that was in Reims so he didn't face the same problem with pronunciation! 'My' Grosjean was a production engineer who, when teaching, had a half-smoked Gitanes Mais permanently stuck to his lower lip.

Well, my list included one French and three English examples, because I'm not very well travelled. No doubt Brazilian and Singapore commentators could provide us with more. Mispronunciation is the norm wherever you are.
