Fantastic visit to Classic Team Lotus last Saturday. The new premises are quite something, with far more cars than they could hold in the old place (although perhaps lacking the atmosphere of the sheds). Four Lotus 72s in one place!

Anyway... when reviewing my photos afterwards, I noticed something that I didn't spot at the time, otherwise I would have asked the obvious question. Innes Ireland's Lotus 21 has a "RAIN" switch on the dashboard. What's that all about?

If the car races today, I'd suggest it's a safety tail light...

Easy - switches on the traction control for slippery conditions, and changes engine mapping for more gentle throttle response. It also sends a wireless message to the pits to prepare the twenty strong pit crew to prepare for the two seconds pit stop to change to "wet" tyres, and activates the demist feature of the racing helmet, adds two degrees to both front and rear wings, changes the active suspension elements to provide more travel and ground clearance, and switches on the wipers on the perspex surrounding the pit stall of the senior race engineer.

Also cues a lackey to grab an umbrella and report to the vicinity of the team manager tout de suite, erect umbrella and protect the hallowed head while maintaining self in a kneeling position. You'll go far, Kid!

No, none of these. Obviously it is to start the rain coming down. We could sure use that technology here in the southwest US. Colin was always ahead of everything.
