Talking to Tony Marsh (15 or so years ago), he mentioned that at a sprint meeting at Wellsbourne, a competitor spilled so much oil on start line (that could not be cleaned up) that the organisers decided to move the start line either forward or sideways, which is a changed configuration. Tony Marsh could only remember appearing at Wellsbourne once. If this is correct then the year would be Spring 1962 as confirmed in books, BRM Volume 2, by Doug Nye & Uphill Racers by Chris Mason.

It is possible that the event Tony Marsh was thinking of was the sprint meeting held at Long Marston on 24th June 1962, where he raced his Marsh-BRM. Tony in a later conversation remembers that at the event where oil was spilt, Sidney Allard was racing his dragster. Sidney Allard did compete at the June 1962 Long Marston meeting and also the 1963 event.

Can anyone remember reading about the oil being spilled and start line having to be moved?

Long Marston, 24 June 1962

Several drivers arrived

hot foot from Bo'ness to compete the follow-

ing day, at Long Marston. This was a

national event over 880 yards and 440 yards.

In the former, Marsh put in B.T.D. in

18.48 secs., a very brave drive in appallingly

windy conditions. Josh Randles took the

sports car class with a time of 20.56 secs,

and Sydney Allard won the 440-yard Drag,

the second qualifier for the AUTOSPORT

Trophy, heading Marsh and Jack Cordingly.

Autosport, 22 February 1963, Page 254

No mention of an oil spill, but this does put Marsh and Allard in the same place.

The contemporary report for Long Marston makes no mention either:

EVESHAM A.C.

LONG MARSTON SPRINT

A RECORD number of spectators

attended the first national sprint to

be organized by the Evesham Auto-

mobile Club at Long Marston on Sun-

day, 24th June. The entry included

many of the leading names in the sprint

and hill-climb world, including Tony

Marsh, Sydney Allard, Patsy Burt and

Josh Randles.

The conditions were extremely windy

and this did affect the times to a certain

extent and made it particularly difficult

for the faster vehicles. Particularly

spectacular in leaving the start line was

Tony Marsh in the Marsh Special, who

completely obscured the start officials

with smoke from burning rubber on his

departure to make B.T.D. in 18.48 secs.

A fine spectacle was provided by the

vintage Bentleys of G. H. G. Burton,

H. S. Pounds and B. M. Russ-Turner.

Phenomenal axle tramp was developed

by these cars! Also in this class were no

fewer than three Aston Martin DB3Ss, of

which that of N. H. Price proved fastest

at 21.92 secs, However, the fastest

sports car was the Cooper Monaco of

Josh Randles in 20.56 secs. Incidentally,

he was one of several competitors who

had travelled down from Bo'ness especi-

ally for the event. Amongst the Grand

Touring classes the very lovely Ferrari

Berlinetta of R. Fry was the fastest and

took the award for the fastest run by a

member of the home club.

In the 440-yard runs which qualified

for the Autosport Trophy, Sydney

Allard did a spectacular 11 secs. dead in

the now famous Dragster. Unfortunately

he blew an exhaust gasket at the end of

the first run and was unable to take the

second. However, this proved enough

to win, with Tony Marsh second in 12.17

secs., and J. Cordingley in the J.B.W.-

Maserati third in 12.70 secs. B. L.

Witty brought his new Chrysler-engined

Dragster but unfortunately after one

practice run it was not possible to start

and it did not make its competition runs.

Any reference to Tony Marsh at any other 1962 meetings at Wellesbourne.

Thank you for starting this thread - brings back happy memories.

I recall well the Evesham MC sprints at Long Marston, I cycled there for several years and still have some of the programmes, which when I retrieve them from storage mid to late October will be popping up on eBay. (I'll mention it here when they are 'live' if that is allowed.) I also went to Wellesbourne a few times as a sprog and living in the village, knew 'the back way' in. Sadly having gained entry without paying, I could not pluck up the courage to approach anyone looking official to obtain a programme. I do remember though Guy(?) Griffiths BRM being present at one of the meetings and Ronnie Symonson's Type 59 Bugatti. Since it was the only Bugatti present that day it probably wasn't a BOC meeting. I think the Jaguar Apprentices MC may also have used the venue. As much as I enjoyed all of these events, nothing came close to the landing of Vulcan XM655 at Wellie at the end of it's final flight. It still resides there courtesy of an active preservation group and subject to sufficient funds, general pollution, noise pollution, objections by residents (who moved in long after the Vulcan) traffic pollution, 'ealth & safety  and now probably covid, still gets to taxi along the main runway annually, going fast enough to get the nose wheel off the ground - still a great sight. These taxi days were open to the public and to add interest there was usually a small classic car show on the airfield and a bit of a boot sale too.

B.A.R.C. (WEST MIDLANDS), 7th July 1962

WELLESBOURNE

SPRINT

THE restricted sprint organized by the

B.A.R.C. (West Midlands Centre) on

7th July was run off in ideal weather

conditions at Wellesbourne Airfield, the

site having been made available through

the kind co-operation of Group Captain

E. Earnshaw. O.B.E. The entry was

over-subscribed. and a most convincing

B.T.D. over the one-mile-plus course

was eventually to go to Steve Neal who

on his first really successful outing with

the attractive new l½-litre Arden-Ford,

apparently made a nonsense of a gear-

change and spoilt one run, and then

went out again to record a shattering

39.4 secs., no other car managing to

break 40 seconds during the day. Austen

May's well-known and very fast Lotus

18 got down to 40.5 secs. to win the

racing class, with Gordon March's Djinn

a comfortable second in 41.3 secs. Randy

Vaughan, with his ex-Keylock Elton,

had some difficulty selecting his gears

and never really got under way, and,

unusually, Freddy Floyd's immaculate

Cooper-J.A.P. was unable to better 42.8

secs. for third place.

Proceedings opened with the small

saloons, the Broadspeed Austin Seven of

John Fitzpatrick returning a smoky but

quite unapproachable 50.4 secs. for the

major honours, while into second place

came a fugitive from the G.T. class in

the shape of S. L. Courts's elaborate and

extensively modified i.o.e. l00E Ford

Escort which, with 51.4 secs., surprised

nobody by taking the place from the

closely matched standard production

Austin Mini of A. K. Berwick (52.3 secs.)

and Rob Ordway's similar Arden-pre-

pared Mini-Minor (52.5 secs.). Miss Jan

Hatton, who might normaliy have heen

expected to feature in the results, had

an off-day, taking her Broadspeed Austin

onto the grass in practice and subse-

quently being plagued by broken fan-

belts and similar minor bothers, which

rather put her out of the running. T.

Keegan ex-works Rapier took the

larger class with 51.1 secs., while, in his

unsuccessful effort to dislodge G. C.

Collins's Rapier from a 52.5 secs. place.

Harry Skelton took his Rapier into the

countryside, but recovered to press on

over the grass in a most hairy-fashion.

while A. Ellis enthusiastically revolved

his Gazelle at the hairpin.

The small sports and G.T. class saw

Ralph Broad's Austin-Cooper, with 48.4

secs., establishing an unassailable class

win and being the only car among this

large class to better the time that Fitz-

patrick's Group 2 Austin had returned

in the standard class, though J. Wales's

Group 3 Austin came very close with

50.5 secs. for the place award. In the

2-litre class G. S. St. John's chain-gang

Frazer-Nash, despite depositing one of

said chains on the start line during prac-

tice, showed a very clean pair of heels

to a representative variety of respectful

modern machinery with a brisk 46.4

secs., while C. Gilbert took his TR3A

slightly off-course and Yorke-Brooks

eventually got his M.G.A into second

place with 48.0 secs.

In the heavy class V. D. Bell first

spun his Jaguar "E" in a big way, and

later recorded 45.1 secs. for second-place

behind class-winner Malcolm Delingpole

who did 42.4 secs. in his Jaguar "E"

before nipping out in his Lotus 7 to

clock 44.0 secs. for second place in the

small sports-racing class behind Paul

Ivey, who got his Speedsport Lotus

Seven round in 42.4 secs. for the class

win. In the next larger category Digby

Martland's Lotus Super Seven, with 41.1

secs., was seriously challenged only by

the Elite of Bob Rose which, on a day

when off-course excursions were the rule

rather than the exception, was second

with a best run of 44.1 secs. despite cer-

tain unscheduled activities at the hair-

pin. Finally came the unlimited class,

enlivened by Ken Wilson's one-time

Equipe Nationale Belge Lister-Jaguar,

which took control of the situation at

one stage and passed some 15 seconds

engaged on a tour of the décor before

ploughing its magnificent way back to

the course, subsequently to make a deter-

mined run in 43.7 secs., winning the

class unchallenged and bringing to a

close a day of fast and exciting sport.

HOWARD BILEY.

17 March 1962, Wellesbourne, Hagley & District L.C.C. sprint

The following weekend the scene moved

to Wellesbourne Mountford, near Leaming-

ton Spa. As there was no class for racing

cars, Ray Meredith made B.T.D. in his

incredibly fast "Moggy," defeating of all

things the ex-Sopwith E-type Jaguar. Tony

Marsh popped in on his way back from

testing his new Marsh-B.R.M. at Finmere

and gave a shattering demonstration of

things to come. The Marsh-B.R.M. is a

combination of Tony's own thoughts in

chassis and body construction mated to an

ex-works 2½-litre B.R.M. engine producing

around 280 b.h.p.

Over at Wellesbourne,

Geoff Richardson had one final fling

in his Connaught-engined Cooper-R.R.A. before

selling the car to Jackie Epstein; he recorded B.T.D.

in 42.4 secs.

Wellesbourne, Saturday 19 May 1962

Robin Beck (ex-Protheroe 3.8 Jaguar XK 120) succeeded in beating the E-types of Sturgess, Lambert and Delingpole over a standing half mile at Wellesbourne, putting in the remarkable sports car time of 22.70 secs.

Wellesbourne 13-10-1962

At this meeting John Horton raced a Connaught A-type in the Racing Cars over 1500cc class

Race No 77, times 14.64" (first run)  14.48"  (second run) 1st in class

Does anyone know the chassis number. He owned both AL10 (long chassied car) much campaigned over the years by a number of drivers, but I believe when he purchased AL10, he also purchased chassis A2, a car never raced in period.  I do not know if he ever competed in A2

A mention in Autosport magazine on event (found on-line) states Horton won Unlimited class, not Racing Cars over 1500cc, but states he was driving the "toothpaste tube" bodied car, That was a Connaught B-type car, chassis B3, but I believe that this chassis, purchased by Bernie Ecclestone at Connaught sale September 1957, sold on to Tony Skelton, who resold the car (1959) to Peter Murdoch, who moved to Canada  (1959-1960 ? ) and took the car with him. So unlikely to be that chassis.
