Yes, he never seemed quite at the level of Beltoise, Cevert, Laffite, Pironi etc., but quick in F3, solid in F 2, and twice a winner at Le Mans. Pretty impressive. RIP Jean-Pierre.

Oh what a shame. He hasn't been well recently and his son has been updating social media followers with his father's operations. Jean-Pierre had been through a lot. Condolences to all the family and what a legacy. My mentor Ed McDonough had great times with him in historic racing at Le Mans Classic.

Very saddened to hear this. Very early in his racing career - and mine - he came into our 'Motor Racing' editorial office at Brands Hatch and John Blunsden and Alan Brinton - I think - did an interview there with him. He was very pleasant, cheerful and engaging and over the following years little in that regard appeared to change. Twice a Le Mans winner, twice 3rd-placed there...not too shabby...

I think he also asked Graham Hill for advice in 1970 and Graham wrote a letter back, telling him when would be good times to see him. Here's his official Facebook page which is run by his son Eric: https://www.facebook...f=page_internal What a shame.

Sad news. A good steady, reliable racer in F3 over the years. At the wheel of Cooper , Matra, Tecno and Martini with numerous 2nds and 3rds in the French F3 Championship from 1964-1970. Highlights were winning the Championship outright in 1970 as well as 1st in the 1968 Monaco GP F3 race in a Meubles Arnold Tecno 67.
Endurance racing saw him as a solid member of Equipe Matra, Renault Alpine and Rondeau including, of course Le Mans victories in 1978 and 1980.

Also a decent F2 driver, finished second to Mike Hailwood in the 1972 European Championship.

Only just seen the sad news. He somewhat preceded all the French hotshots of the Seventies and Eighties, didn’t he? I remember reading in a period French magazine that he was considered to be a bit of a father figure to many of those who rose to fame via the French talent schemes of the time. Yet he carved out his own niche and crowned it with his Le Mans successes.
Oddly enough, I bought the latest Automobilsport magazine a couple of days ago, and was (and still am) moved to see a lovely, lovely picture of Jaussaud and Jean Rondeau after their 1980 victory. That image just oozes happiness and pride, and rightly so.
RIP Jean-Pierre, double vainqueur au Mans!
