There has been an absolutely horrifying accident at Brands this afternoon during the BARC club cars championship.

@bbcsoutheast

A car has collided with a person, after it came off the track @Brands_Hatch motor racing circuit.

Kent Police was called at about 3pm.
Emergency services, including the air ambulance are currently at the scene

Please do not put graphic videos onto the thread (they are out there) and be wary of non official updates.

This really isn't the day for racing, is it, considering the Spa-crash that seems to have ended fairly well after all. Hope this ends the same way!

With that being said, hasn't there been cars going over/through catchfencing along T1 at Brands a couple of times the last few years?

EDIT: I do not know if this have happened in T1, or if the car has gone over any barriers, or any other thing about the accident but what's been posted in the tweet in the post above. It was just a general question.

I found out about this because Jimmy Broadbent was supposed to be racing later that day. It really is horrific.

From what I can tell, the car has indeed gone through/over the catch fencing.

Hit a marshal it seems. :(  Hoping for the best.

I think two got hit from what I saw. Not good looking at all. The armco seemed to not hold the car well either, how on earth can that happen?

Another sobering reminder that motorsport is dangerous at any level.

Maybe this circuit needs a little bit of a safety revision.

That barrier bent like butter...

I really hope everyone is fine, but looks bad.

Seen it myself now, if the broadcast wasn't on a slight delay, that's an insane job by the producer to cut away when it happened.

Have seen it too, while looking for news. Wish I hadn't. We have British marshals here as fellow forum members.

They knew. The announcer called the red flag immediately.

Awful crash, direct hit on the marshall's post.

Some incredibly boneheaded driving by car 157 to repeatedly hit the car he was overtaking on the straight.

:( I am guessing people would anyway but I would ask that anyone seeing videos of this on social media, please report them out of respect. People’s families don’t need that out there.

Yeah, that was simply appalling and dangerous driving. I wonder if anything will come of it.

With the greatest of respect SophieB, I think the same could be said for starting a thread about it.

Anyone who sees this will instantly going and seek out the videos which are currently online. Perhaps a candidate for thread deletion?

Dangerous driving no doubt. Seems all too acceptable these days, sadly.

I considered that and appreciate the viewpoint but you could say that about any serious incident. This accident is likely going to have further ramifications because of just how serious it is and how it could happen.

I hear you. It's all over social media and I don't think reporting is going to reign that in.

As someone else pointed out, the director and vision switcher involved for this race did the world a favour by cutting away at the moment of impact, whether through intention or pure luck.

I fully agree with your sentiment, and sorry to labour this point, but an internet forum, specifically a thread on an evolving news event, is the number one place where rumours will spread during an event like this.

If the concern is for respect of the victims etc, this thread should be locked.

(I only became aware of this crash after seeing the thread)

But is it really disrespectful to discuss the incident? I don’t see it that way, and I haven’t seen any individual posts that I would consider to be disrespectful either.

I was responding to a plea not to post rumours, and an earlier comment about respecting families involved.

My point is: if that is the primary concern here, thread locking is the only suitable answer.

There's a tent apparently covering the wreckage of the car which appears to be on the circuit, as tweeted by this person: https://twitter.com/...1183700999?s=20

It appeared to me that there were two marshalls at that post, and if that report is accurate, one of them was incredibly, incredibly lucky.

It is unusual for a whole day to be cancelled after a midday crash. Even with a serious crash, once those involved are safe the wreckage is collected and the day's racing continues. :|

I did see a comment from someone claiming to be the driver's daughter on a clip of the incident...however, it's probably best not to share what she said until we get official word. Don't want to share something that turns out to be fake or gives false hope.

When the incident gets to a certain level of seriousness and police become involved they call the shots, and will take as long as they need to investigate and gather evidence.

It could also (at least in part) be due to a need for barrier repair that’s not possible in such a short time frame. These events typically don’t have the same resources on site as Grands Prix do.

The British Automobile Racing Club is saddened to confirm that as a result of an accident that occurred during a race meeting at Brands Hatch circuit today (Saturday 31 July), a volunteer marshal tragically lost their life. The rest of the day’s racing activity was cancelled.

As with any major incident, the BARC is now working with the national governing body, Motorsport UK, and the local police.

On behalf of everyone connected with the BARC, we are devastated by loss of one of the amazing volunteer marshal community who do so much to enable the sport to take place. Our thoughts and best wishes are with the family and friends of all those involved.

It is anticipated that the event will resume on Sunday.

Ends”

Motorsport owes a lot to these people who expose themselves to great danger, and are rarely appreciated.

Rest in peace.
