BREAKING NEWS: Maverick Vinales has been withdrawn from this weekend and has been suspended by Yamaha
Posted 12 August 2021 - 10:12
Well, if related to COVID-19 then it would be a breach of protocol to get himself suspended. But given everything, I did have the feeling they might fall out prior to the season's end. Pretty much means they've become Honda - all eggs in the Fabio basket.

Posted 12 August 2021 - 10:14
what could he have done?
Posted 12 August 2021 - 10:14
Tried to blow his engine during last Sunday's race perhaps?

Thats certainly what it sounds like. If thats true then its one of the stupidest things I've ever heard a rider do. With Maverick I'm not even that surprised either.

"Risks to the rider himself"
So Viñales didn´t mind to hurt himself just for the fun of blowing his engine?

That is bananas. It's not even that original...

Tried to blow his engine during last Sunday's race perhaps?
I am really out of the loop on this but *why* would he or anyone do that? Hypothetically, I guess.
Posted 12 August 2021 - 10:24
I also want to point out at the top of the thread that these are extremely serious allegations against Vinales that would almost certainly be defamatory if untrue. So if you're going to make any big statements please keep them tethered to real reported facts. Thx!

The only plausible explanation I can think of, other than pure spite, was perhaps to cause a red flag and restart? He was running dead last after all.
Posted 12 August 2021 - 10:27
I wonder who will replace him? Time for Rossi's last hurrah

I think I've heard of racers try to blow an engine because they didn't fancy competing for some lowly position. The details escape me, although it probably would only happen at the upper level of the sport where someone else is writing the cheques for the engine rebuild. Much harder to hide with all the telemetry the teams have.
I want to choose words carefully because Maverick is clearly a sensitive and interior guy and has jeopardized his career with drastic and regrettable stunts before. He's incredibly talented but I wonder whether he wants to be in MotoGP. He's been winning Grands Prix since the age of 16 and I wonder whether that's a helpful thing for anyone's development as an adult.

This is fantastic. Surely one of the most bizarre stories I've read in a while.

To have a reason to retire instead of cruising around at the back, I guess. But yes, all speculation at this point.

Historical precedents, as discussed on TNF (title says 'car', but it includes one case in bikes) :

This Yamaha - Viñales thing is so weird and has been going on for so long that everything is on the table.
Even that it might not be true and Yamaha just want to drop him now.

I don't think it's likely that Yamaha are lying about this though. They must be pretty sure in order to go public like this.

"Suspected engine sabotage" is quite different than "irregular operation of the motorcycle", which i believe should be the thread´s title until we know the facts and Viñales side of the story.

Yeah, I'll go with that. Yamaha are clearly choosing their words carefully so I should too!

This is absolutely crazy.
Hard to see him racing for Yamaha again even after this race to be honest, think that might be it.

If these supposed allegations are proven correct, which given the fact that Yamaha are a large multinational corporation who do not want to get sued points in the direction of there being something behind them, Vinales needs to seek help. One bizarre, self-harming incident after another.
Posted 12 August 2021 - 11:10
Do Yamaha even have time to organise a replacement for this weekend? Morbidelli is injured, Rossi and Crutchlow would leave a hole in SRT, Razgatlıoğlu and Gerloff have recently re-committed to WSBK (and the former is in championship contention). One of the Japanese test riders?
The press release says they aren't entering a substitute.

"The precise nature of Vinales' offending "actions" is unclear, but there are rumours from those trackside that he was deliberately revving the bike on the limiter in fifth gear along the main straight rather than shifting to sixth, presumably due to frustration with the technical problems he had encountered."

Maybe this is that Other Vinales that the Other Vinales doesn't like to talk about.

Vinales father also withdrawn his team from the SuperSport 300.
(they were using Yamaha bikes)
It's war!

Thanks. Having read the supporting stories, the carefully worded stories of the many changes in team personnel are also noted.
Speaking hypothetically about drivers or riders who don’t want to go to work, seems like they could just announce they had crippling diarrhoea.

Only one winner though.

What was this about? Is this like how Alonso maintains that ‘Alonso’ is a character created and sustained by the press, and someone that he recognises and understands but maintains is also not anything like him as a person?

It's kinda like a meta-joke here in the MotoGP circles. Somewhat like Jack 'title contender' Miller.
There's Maverick Vinales who blitzes the field and is a huge alien talent that, like Crutchlow recently said, is 'only comparable to Marc Marquez in speed'.
And then there's the Other Vinales, the hissing shadow entity doppelganger that finishes a strong 16th every other weekend from starting on the front row for absolutely no discernible reason other than hidden spite.

I don´t see any winner on this, actually.
Being this the whole Yamaha-Viñales saga, not just this last incident.
Posted 12 August 2021 - 12:36
I'm speechless. This is so bizarre.
Posted 12 August 2021 - 12:46
This must surely be the end of his Yamaha career.
Get Lorenzo on that bike (I'm 12% serious)!
Posted 12 August 2021 - 12:47
Man... one wonders if Vinales is on the black list Max Biaggi found himself on with Japanese manufacturers. This is crazy.

Dont watch Moto GP much but I do know the word "Maverick" ... and youre telling me that this guy's legit govt name, as in the one in his passport and on his birth certificate is actually "Maverick" .... and folks are surprised by this.

I'm more upset that his team-mate isn't called Goose Quartararo.

Funny that this article from a couple of months ago, talks about Vinales and Kocinski in the same breath, what with the latter being sacked many years ago for deliberately blowing up his engine...

Omg DS27, I loved that article but I forgot about the engine blow up detail. Wow
This is like an ouroboros of unnecessary edginess where everyone loses.
I hope he gets to be on an Aprilia eventually. I need that next chapter in the Weird Tale of Maverick. What do y'all think ? Will it even happen now ?
Posted 12 August 2021 - 13:46
Why should Aprilia sign an unreliable looney?
