A real left-field one here; is anyone able to help me please with the first names of the late 1960s competition heads of Ford Belgium, surname Coppieters, and Ford France - surname Schmidt? I am drawing a blank via the usual internet searches....rname

Are you sure about that?  Staepelaere didn't even become an official Ford driver until the late 1960s?  After retiring from active driving in 1979,he was a PR consultant for Ford but doesn't seem to have ever been in a management position.

Staepelaere was Team Manager of the Ford assisted Belga sponsored Robert Droogmans in a Jeff Churchill run Escort in the Belgian Open championship in 82/83 but I don't think he was in overall charge of Ford Belgium wider interests in racing as well as rallying.

That may have extended to the GpB RS200 programme and then the GpA Sierra Cosworth rally programmes both with Belga.

There was degree of cover up following Droogmans' shunt in his RS2000 practice car (in which he broke an ankle and his girl friend riding in the back was hurt) the night before the Tour of Flanders in 83 but whether that was to protect Ford from bad publicity over what was of course a public road accident is unclear. I was there competing and had been in the Rally HQ café just before Robert and Ronny left for final practice and it was Gilbert who was on the phone to get the Churchill mechanics out quickly to recover the car.

I'm quoting from Nick Brittan's Formula Ford book to mark the tenth anniversary of FFord and pardon me, he's referred to as Competition Coordinator. It may help Jon find out more.

Gilbert Staepelaere, a noted rally driver and sometimes co-pilot of Ickx in the earliest days of his racing career, might have been a later incumbent of the role. The fellow I am after - Coppieters - was in charge in the 1960s.

Sorry Jon. Maybe Stuart Turner may know and I have Graham Gauld's details if that could be helpful. He has talked with Stuart Turner.
