Horrendous news.

Maillet's body was found by the local police in her Luxembourg home, alongside the bodies of her husband and another woman, all three showing gunshot wounds.

According to a statement issued by the public prosecutor, Maillet's husband is believed to have shot and killed both women before committing suicide.

"At 00:10, the bodies of two women and one man were discovered by the police in a house in Gouvy, all three presenting gunshot wounds," the statement said.

"According to our information, the male individual voluntarily used his firearm to kill both women, including his wife, before killing himself."

The Spa-Francorchamps circuit, which Maillet had overseen for the past five years, issued a statement confirming her death and expressing its shock at the tragedy.

"It is with great sadness that the team of the Spa-Francorchamps circuit have been informed of the death of Nathalie Maillet, CEO," read the statement.

"On this very sad day, the whole staff wish to present their most sincere condolences to Nathalie's family and friends.

"The circuit, but also motor racing, has lost today a passionate woman, strong in her convictions and always looking to the future."

One of the few women in a position of power in the sport and one that was having a major positive influence on the future of the track.

RIP to her family and love ones.

Sources here say it was a crime passionel followed by suicide. Not much to do with gender.

I usually expect a topic on this forum to go completely basket case eventually, but this time it only took 10 minutes after the opening post. Well done...

On topic, very tragic. Hopefully we get a fitting tribute when F1 comes around.  :well:

Not always, but it sounds very much like that in this case.

Fire arm / shotgun crimes are actually very rare in Belgium. Yes I've read it was a 'passionate crime'. Horrible news.

Calling it a passionate crime or crime of passion is just the old “poor me” syndrome of men making excuses for a man killing women.

The fact is the mistress is also kind of a public figure.

Such a tragedy.

And a shame that some use a tragedy to make sick socio-political points.

Majority of violence has been done by males through history, not females. This isn't news.

Can we please stop with the very specific male hate comments. Twice in succession on your posts suggests an agenda.

As a male victim of female domestic violence I can assure you there is plenty more on the other fence with regards to 'excuses' that get blown over.

Don't make it a debate, just please stop these types of hate comments. This is a tragic story regardless on all fronts.

Horrific news.

For what I’ve read on Belgian media, the alleged murderer (75 y.o. Franz Dubois, Maillet’s husband, who also committed suicide) was also involved in motor racing, having founded the Fun Cup series and had raced in touring car in the seventies and eighties.

That is the point though. It needs to be called out rather than accepted.

I am sorry for your experience but these tragedies are endemic and pretending otherwise doesn’t help.

Yes he participated in quite a bit of 24h of Spa Francorschamps editions, my dad must have raced against him then considering the time that he was active ('70s). That race was extremely dangerous in those days when it was still done at the old Spa track.

I believe the fact that there roughly 15 men for every woman in prison world wide indicates that it isn’t accepted.  I don’t believe that “calling it out” will change those numbers.

Men are more violent than women due to biological factors (testosterone), so trying to bring politics into everything won't change that.

This is not politicking.

I will make no further comment on this thread other than to refer those who seek to minimise such crimes and the circumstances that creates them to refer to the work of Laura Richards, who has done so much excellent work on the issues of coercive control, domestic abuse and male violence.

And on average men receive significantly longer sentences than women for the same crimes.

I think it would be best to wait until more reporting is in before jumping to any sociological conclusions. Men murdering the women they are close to is depressing and relatively common but right now we don't actually know anything beyond the bare facts of who died and how.

I don't understand the whole concept of "crimes of passion", for what it's worth. Human beings are big enough to not turn ultra violent and kill people when they get angry.

This is a truly awful event. As a man I find myself appalled by the entitled action of one of my gender, and the attempts from other men on here to explain it away.

RIP to the poor women involved. May their work go on.

Frankly it’s laughable that you call it ‘hate’. Classic misogyny right there. Disgusting attempt at shutting down a debate that needs to be had - and will be had regardless of what men like you have to say about it.

You didnt even take the time to comment or even acknowledge the victims in your post which is so telling. I hope you reflect long and hard.

Bloody hell.  Poor women.

Calling it a passionate crime or crime of passion is just the old “poor me” syndrome of men making excuses for a man killing women.

In 1990 Didier Calmels (Larrousse-Lola) murdered his wife in a crime passionel. The Court sentenced him to 6 years. He served 2. It's basically a legal term in Francophone countries. Used to be an outright defence to murder; it seems even now it is used as mitigation; it's not surprising the media use the term as shorthand.

I think there is a space for a thread in Paddock Club discussing quite a lot of issues associated (or not, depending on your point of view) with this particular case. Might open one later - but it simply isn't appropriate to debate these points in the motorsport area of the forum.

Tragic news.

Agreed with the above two comments, some opinions in this thread should be placed elsewhere. Especially as nobody knows the specifics etc.

What was the public perception of Maillet in Belgium? Did she do a good job has CEO of Spa? I quickly checked and she seemed to have an architecture background, that is quite a remarkable step then to CEO of Spa?
