Masi needs to be removed.
I have held this opinion for a while, today has further reinforced it.

Doing a tough job.

Amateur. Has no clue at all. This is the biggest stage of autosport in the world and Masi is not fit for the job.

I have a genuine question, who wrote the rules? Did Charlie & Michael have a say in those?

Difficult job... everyone looks to you to know everything. It's a thankless task and he's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't... I think he's doing a decent job.

Pretty much everything people will say about Masi in here, people said about Charlie when he was in charge.

It doesn't even matter if he makes right or wrong decisions, what matters is that he looks indecisive and totally out of his element. That's unforgivable in a leadership role. I hope he has a family he wants to spend more time with.

He got shoehorned in as an emergency at an unanticipated time, but unfortunately the shoes never did and are unlikely to fit.
Luck has it hes still in the role but hes been there long enough and flustered through so many incomprehensible decisions and moments in such a short time that hes proven to be as bad as Whiting was at his worst.
I'm sure he's a nice bloke, but being as clear as mud isn't a requirement for this job.
Off with his head!

If he did, he should know them crystal clear.
If he didn't, his one job was to learn them.
Either way by not knowing is not good enough.

If any good comes from this farce it's the end of Masi. He's been in way over his head since the very start.

It all has been fun and games, but then chips are down you have to make a decision.
I say: enough is enough.

Well he did follow the rules, what else should he do?
The problem is the selective interpretation. E.g. they only find the force majeure thing 2 hours late.

Posted 29 August 2021 - 15:15
He's not the only one
It's not a people problem, it's a process problem.
One perhaps created by the organizational culture of the FIA. Its very nature.

I hate threads started with the word "discuss" without contributing anything.
People are going to scapegoat anyone if something doesn't go as planned. Blame the atrocious rules riddled with ambiguity.

Yup. It's like there's no jurisprudence. No case law.

When is a red flag not a force majeur?
My thoughts exactly.

Masi’s radio calls should be enough to see why he’s not fit for the role.
Yes because the few radio clips we get on tv tell everything about the job don’t they...sigh.
Plenty of tinfoil hats round here.

should go back to football

It's not just him. It's a combination of factors, including the late race start time.

He doesn't control the weather.
We'd complain regardless of who was in charge, as people also did with Whiting. Some criticisms are fair but it does got a bit OTT at times.

Mistakes are being made every ten minutes here. The race start should never have been suspended. The pace car running was fine. Do the distance to the point where full points are awarded ( I think it's half distance but I may be wrong) then even without a racing lap the result stands. If a car fails, has a knock or whatever then so be it. But all should be safe behind the pace car.
That would be worse by a factor of about ten trillion. You would be awarding full points for a traffic queue. Any racing would literally be illegal.

An unenviable job, however.

“Michael it’s Ron.. as the FIA race director you’re meant to understand the rules so you can apply them, riiight?”Yes because the few radio clips we get on tv tell everything about the job don’t they...sigh.

“Uhhh yeah, I think so. Let me check that”

It’s a tough job and fan opinion of his role should count for very little, particularly when it’s often flavoured by how his decisions effect your favourite drivers. But I do think today has been a mountain of confusing statements and vacillation instead of leadership.

But we never heard the teams and Charlie talking, we have nothing to compare, Masi may look weak just because we can now hear the conversations that have happened for decades.I do get the impression that Michael Masi commands a little less respect in the paddock than Charlie Whiting.

In my book the "race" should have finished by now ----- Martin Brundle just now said it ---- just Cary on behind the safety car....
That could have made a decent movie, Carry On Behind The Safety Car...

Not much too discuss.
He's absolutely clueless, and woefully out of his depth in far shallower puddles than we're seeing this afternoon.

He needs to be fired, that’s an indecisive mess. It’s neither entertaining for us watching it on TV nor the crowd sitting in the rain who need to drive back to their homes.

I wonder if Autosport will host a poll whether Masi should stay. Or do they want their media passes?

How could they not run this earlier instead of smaller classes?
Complete amateurhour and really, really, really bad look for whole sport. Hope the spectators get full refund. Otherwise I think for many this might be last f1 race live ever.
