Whilst I applaud the intent, the website is currently a bit of a mess of broken links.  Then they apparently want to charge €26.51 for a single issue to be sent to the UK (including €4.42 import duty - surely there is no import duty on books or magazines?).  I also note that the shop page and the checkout give different base prices for the magazine!  It would be rather more helpful if, for example, they showed a full list of contents and contributors.  But unfortunately I cannot see it progressing very far at that sort of price point.

Ah, I'm glad it wasn't just me. Couldn't open it without it asking for my email, couldn't close it, so like the above poster, thought 'nah, not right now' and moved on.

This paragraph below gives a clue but I suspect it is part of the post-Brexit arm wrestling... 

 

There are some notable changes to the way VAT is applied on goods sold into the UK. They include a requirement for overseas sellers to collect and account for VAT on direct sales into the UK, and for online marketplaces to do the same if they facilitate the sales. Previous relief from import VAT on sales from non-EU countries worth less than £15 will also be removed. The government says this will help UK businesses to compete better with overseas sellers who have benefited from VAT-free imports in the past.

I can’t say I had too much trouble with the website… (and haven’t given them email address).

 

That seemingly very high delivery charge is for the year’s subscription - that page seems to have that shown as a default, but the single issue delivery cost is shown if you select it…

That does seem to be a bit of a glitch - they do say that they are still finding their way with the digital stuff - so give ‘em a break - as a lifelong design-for-print specialist, I have sympathy!

German GP 1935; Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa; Lauda’s Mercedes 190 1984 (presumably from the notorious one-marque race at the ‘Ring); 100 years of Avus; Tom Kristensen’s career; Lancia 037; Metro 6R4; Cooper S.

 

I think I'll give it a go - surely a brave effort such as this deserves at least a look? So many folks bemoan the lack of such journals, but then when a possible addition to the field appears, the creators are slagged off because they haven’t yet perfected details of new-world tech that, in other contexts, they decry.

This is an import to the UK.  Books and magazines are zero-rated for VAT and there should be no import duty either, so I don't see where the €4.42 has come from.

The delivery charge was what came up when I put a single issue in my cart and selected the UK as the delivery destination.  For comparison purposes I also looked at a couple of other country's delivery charges.  I did not attempt to look at the delivery charge for a subscription.

 

There is some mention of the content but incomplete (presumably) and with no mention of the number of pages (that I could find) nor the contributors.  

 

Whilst designing a website that works might indeed take some effort and knowledge, providing basic information easily found on such a website does not.  But, in any case, it is their means of enticing people to buy their magazine, so it is pretty important to get it right. 

 

So, high price, poor information and so on (together with some experience of other such ventures - e.g. Strada magazine very recently) suggests to me it won't last long.  I certainly take no pleasure in saying that but it is hard enough to succeed with something like this even if you do everything right.  I agree it is a brave effort and I would take a look but not, based on the information on the website, at 25 quid.

Also, how are you arriving at 25 quid? Current exchange rates indicate it would be a little under 20, inc. delivery.

 

Oh - what was this advertisement for that some of you could not bypass? I haven't seen that.

The advantage when working with print is that once the subject is on the intended paper, every impression is more or less the same. Of course, there's some work to be done interpreting projected light and reflected light, how readable that light grey on shiny white paper will come across... With a web page, you have to consider how different web browsers will render it.

 

The HTML code for the popup box for a newsletter subscription is as clear as mud to read (I missed out the last two closing lines accidentally). It is something generated by a computer to be read by a computer, and it is the sort of thing which easily goes wrong.

Tweaking HTML and related code so that it works properly on all browsers is something which regularly defeats major publishers. It's wise to keep it simple and stay away from the tricky special effects IMHO.

I put a single issue in the cart.  Then go to check out and set the address to United Kingdom.  It then says the cost is €18.11 (although the shop page says it is €16.00) and the shipping is €8.40 which, it says, gives a total of "€26,51 EUR (includes €4,42 Import Duty estimated for the United Kingdom (UK))".  Maybe it is doing something different for you, which would be worrying in itself?

 

I was too lazy to check the current exchange rate but that comes out at £22.63 in theory although I'd have to do the transaction to see what it actually came out at.

 

Edited to add: In any case, there should be no VAT or duty payable.  HMRC's own website is www.trade-tariff.service.gov.uk if anyone cares enough (or, specifically, www.trade-tariff.service.gov.uk/headings/4902 for printed matter).

Looks like someone's passion has got the better of them without someone running the "nuts & bolts" of the operation, hopefully they can resolve these issues and get to print, I admire anyone who sets up a printed magazine in 2021.

Right, after reading the thread, I tried again with the website.  This time I clicked the invisible X to remove the demand for an e-mail address, and got the full glory of the website.  Hmmm.....  Not going to bother struggling with the bizarre pricing structure.

I had no poblem with the email box. Just click outside the box on your screen and it will disappear immediately. The prices of the English and German editions are slightly different which might account for the noted discrepancies mentioned above . To Belgium, the VAT is already included in the price totalling 23€ (7 € for delivery). Seems like all articles are written by Johan Dillen (or is he just the author of the snippets published in the site?). I 'm tempted to give it a go as I believe it is an enthusiast's project and as such meriting some degree of support.
