It's a marathon, not a sprint - race day at Monza! Race start 2pm BST / 3pm CEST (2 hours 20 minutes from this post)

A crucial day in the championship - can Verstappen punish Hamilton's sprint race stumble, or will Mercedes fight back to reclaim the championship lead? Or can McLaren score their first double podium since Australia 2014?

Hoping to see Lewis fight with Max. An ideal situation, Lewis+Max to take each other out, McLaren 1-2 with anyone else on the podium.

If max doesn't win this I'll be shocked.

Mclaren will give him a nice healthy cushion.

To have a race for the win then Lewis needs to get both mclarens at the start. Can't see that happening.

So we are going to see a Bottas vs Russell fight, right? Bring it on!

Good point! :D

Mind you we did see that last year.

Good fortune ALWAYS finds itself in Hamilton’s pocket.

I have no doubt it will greet him with open arms today.

That's the thing about 7x champions in any sport - it's all about the luck: not the skill, talent, hard work, determination, or commitment.

Lewis must be 2x skilled...committed than Senna  :p

With some luck Mansell would be a multi WDC.

But I must say, having a McLaren 1-2 with Max and Lewis together again after the first lap would be ideal.

Quoting myself from the build-up thread. I think this will be the formula for an exciting race. I don't expect the McLarens to have the race pace to stay with Max and Lewis though.

..or badly timed safety car? Hamilton is trying undercut, but due to safety car he drops behind one or two Ferrari?

Based on my crystall ballthat will not happen.

1Crystall ball based on everything that has happened so far this year and the results of the amount of points attributed to luck by the drivers when they were creating their 2021 persona in the F1 2021 RPG Character Creator ©.

Morning folks. MotoGP, F1, Indycar...and a spot of NFL tonight. Great day. Have an odd feeling we'll get an odd result today at Monza, but would prefer to see Verstappen take a clean win.

I said in the McLaren team thread months ago:

An outside prediction, but if McLaren do manage to steal a race victory this year, I think it's more likely to be Daniel on the top step.

Hopefully this prophecy comes true today ;)

If Hamilton can clear the Mclarens within the first half of the race, he’ll still be in a good position to fight Max.

Max will be more than a pit stop ahead by that time.

How? The Mcl are only 0.1s slower per lap and Hsm 0.4s faster?

Max pulled a gap of 12 seconds on Ricciardo in 18 laps minus the SC laps.

Terrific feature on Sky just now with Damon Hill and Martin Brundle driving two (recreations of) 1961 Ferrari 156s - aka Sharknose - at Thruxton.

Congratulations to all concerned.

it doesnt..

lewis has had lots of bad luck over the years.

2012 was probably his worst season of bad luck.

and this season good fortune has not fallen into his pocket.

he would have more points than he currently does if that was the case.

Pit stop time loss seemed to be 23–24 seconds in 2019.

Depends on what part of that first half? I mean if we're talking lap 26..then Max would have enough gap to pit and appear ahead of Hamilton.

Some insight from PDLR, supported by qualifying onboards: Parabolica was always a weakness from Hamilton.

Cuquerella: Ferrari was the only team he has been in, where it was communicated in the radio that the president (Montezemolo) arrived, and then asked to give the best impression.

He said it was no coincidence that when Montezemolo arrived, the mechanics started dropping tools, etc.

They were really poor on pace in the sprint race, albeit may have been the softs.

Gasly team radio: "I can't race like this, I can do one more lap if you want, but I can't race like this."

Throttle related according to Autosport on Twitter.

(He's starting from the pit lane anyway.)

Hey all!

I have a feeling that if Ricciardo has a sniff of 1st place into T1 he'll divebomb and hope for the best. I think for a good race, this is what we need.

Really hope it's not VER-Mclarens-HAM out of T1, that could potentially be race over in terms of the win.

It’s important for Hamilton to win this race. The car is fast and should have been on Pole...

He def complicated his life...

And... Its great to see McLaren competitive. I like the drivers and Seidl. The team combo gives me old McLaren vibes

On empty tanks though. The differential could be vastly different with a full fuel load.

Kind of hoping to see Norris get past his teammate at start because I think he is the faster of the two in race stint. This way, I hope, we perhaps could see something happen in the front instead of Verstappen cruising into the horizon.

It could be a drinking game, have a drink every time Lewis complains about tyres.... having said that, no thanks, I don't need to go to hospital to have my stomach pumped from a bottle of vodka in an hour....

For those hard core enough to take on the challenge, skull a double when he sets a fastest lap after saying the tyres are finished....

Think there was quite a bit of nursing the soft tyres going on. At least I hope that accounts for some of the time lost.

Agree with you on 2012, but not this year. He was very lucky in Imola, Baku, Silverstone, Hungary. And no real bad luck to counter that.

Lewis can't afford to fall further back at the start. Yesterday showed its very hard to overtake so Lewis has to be aggressive.

Finally?

Missed Silverstone? He sent a less than 50/50 in there so I'm sure he will be willing to.
