The BBC is reporting that an F1 fan from Liverpool was arrested in The Hague after the GP at Zandvoort as the Police thought he was a Sicilian mafioso! :stoned:

Is funny but is it thread worthy?

Sure why not, we don’t have to pay for new threads, they’re free.
It’s not trolling, it’s not trying to wind people up, its not breaking a board rule or duplicating other discussions, it’s fine. Start threads, it’s fun.

As a general comment, please report threads that you think shouldn’t be here rather than discussing that in threads!

Thanks Sophie - I'm aware that it's only loosely-related to the GP, but I was considering bringing more of a motorsport aspect to it by discussing the history of the police in the Netherlands as related to the GP.

I can imagine that it's very funny for the guy on the receiving end though...

Probably not really for this thread but I have never found the report button on mobile. Can you confirm where it is. Not that I would have reported this post but for future reference.

I doubt it was fun at the time, but it's a cool story he can tell in the pub for the rest of his life, right?

Or as the Daily Express reported it:

"Outrage as Brexit-hating Verstappen-loving Dutch police harass an innocent British Hamilton fan."

I nearly fell for that until I realised there was no mention of Princess Diana, and no disastrously incorrect long term weather forecast included.

Yeah, but I couldn't figure how to work those in!

Not only that, but no mention of how it'll affect the value of your house. :drunk:

If this report is accurate, it sounds as though the police in The Hague were given duff intelligence from the Proscutor's Office in Trento:

The Dutch "special forces" seem to have identified him erroneously.

the Trento public prosecutor's office had it turned out, probably after a report from an informant, that Messina Denaro would have been at the Het Pleeidoi restaurant on Wednesday 8 September. Having notified the judiciary in The Hague, the operation had been prepared by the special forces who had identified that man, who was not a Dutchman, the probable wanted person.

Based, though, on information that the wanted Mafia boss would be at the same restaurant on the same day.  Given that the chances of both the target and his double being there at the same time are remote, it suggests to me that it was more a case of the Trento officials getting confused between two people, and that Messina Denaro was probably nowhere near that restaurant..

They're not very good at identifying British people, are they?  They couldn't identify Jim Clark at the 1965 GP, and now they can't tell the difference between Don Corleone and someone who probably sounds like the late George Harrison!

Not to be a buzzkill, but these arrest teams have you in their van before you get the chance to make George Harrisony sounds. Unless you lot scream in a very particular way too.   ;)

They arrested him on the Wednesday after the GP and didn't release him until Saturday.  They must have questioned him in that time, surely?  What amazes me is that the Italians won't close the case yet.  Oh, and BTW, I'm not Scouse.

What's weirder still is that there was an episode of the greatest British sitcom of all time that had pretty much this exact plotline:

I meant British. Having heard people from Liverpool speak I must admit there's a very distinct difference, so sorry about that. You lot all look the same, but you most definitely don't sound the same!

Anyway, must've waited for the Italian authorities.

Apparently the Dutch police couldn't find a Scouse translator.

Wasn't it a give-away that he kept saying "Calm down, calm down" and was wearing a shell suit?
