Many thanks for both replies.

I googled it too, but could only find a different badge for the East Africa Motor Sports Club, which makes me think that the badge I photographed was something else. Hence my original post.

Next time I see that particular motor car, I shall put a note on the windscreen asking the question.

The East African Motor Sports Club was founded circa 1947 — see Motor Sport, February 1947, Page 42.

He was Rupert Pitchford.

If not East Africa then perhaps East Anglia Motor Sports Club?  Just a guess.

 

Currently there is an Anglia Motor Sports Club, founded recently, in 2012/13.  Prior to March 1950 there was an East Anglian Motor Club which, according to Motor Sport, changed its name "..to avoid confusion with a similar organisation in Essex".

Essex Amateur MSC?  Essex & Anglia MSC?   Or maybe it's nothing to do with Essex.   East Acton MSC?  The possibilities are endless!

I can confirm that is definitely an East African Motor Sports Club badge from the 1950s.

I've looked through my 150-odd collection of photos of motor sport in Kenya. Hardly anyone competed at Brackenhurst, Nakuru, Langa-Langa or in the Safari with badges on their cars. Those that do show any badges aren't clear enough to make out the detail,

That seems to be conclusive.  Evidently oiks could be the EAMSC, but not necessarily in the Royal Association.  Bit like the RAC in the UK which was for gentlemen not motor mechanics!  And I don't suppose non-white East Africans got a look in either.

It was complex.   The REAAA was an organisation combining the functions of the  AA and the RAC and open to all.  The EAMSC was for "whites only" but the Motorcycle Club of Kenya was open to all races. Races, hillclimbs, rallies etc were open to entrants from all races.  Around about 1960 there was a major split in the EAMSC over whether the rules could be changed so Joginder Singh could be admitted to membership.  This resulted in many members leaving and forming the multiracial Nairobi Motor Club. 

Following Independence in 1963, all clubs became multiracial

Many thanks - that’s great. Next time I see the car I shall put a note on its windscreen asking if the owner would like a pint. He or she probably has an interesting story to tell. I particularly like the racing car on the badge, which is very well done.

Doesn’t it just! As does the machine that it graces - an obviously much-loved and well-used X-Type Jaguar.
