Firstly, a tip of the hat to our friend Rewind, who alerted me to this lovely collection of pictures.

Edward Quinn was an Irish photographer, who worked in the south of France in the 1950s and 1960s. He's perhaps best known for his collaborations with Pablo Picasso, as well as his work at events like the Cannes Film Festival. Luckily for us, he also seems to have found the Monaco Grand Prix and the Monte Carlo Rally - and some other motoring events - worthy of his lens. Most of the Monaco pictures are taken in the pit lane and focus on the people rather than the machinery. Corrections and additions to the captions are welcomed, as there are quite a few unidentified faces - particularly amongst the mechanics and various other 'hangers-on'. I've already submitted a few, which were gratefully received, but I'm sure you lot can come up with many more!

The Monaco pictures include every race from 1950 to 1965, plus 1978 and some bonus shots taken on the set of The Racers. The Monte pictures are from 1951 to 1959 (except 1957) and 1963 - although there only a few from the later years. Plus some other stuff under 'various', including a pedal car race dated to 1951.

One picture which is of particular interest is this one, from Monaco in 1960. The chap on the left and the one in the middle are obvious, but who is the one on the right? I know who I think it is, but opinions are welcome.

Looks like a cross between John Fenning, and Cliff Allison during his bearded phase. If he ever had a bearded phase. So, no idea really.

Some great shots.  Thanks for the link Richard.

From Willem Oosthoek... the bearded gentleman standing next to Stirling is Norman Solomon, a close friend or Stirling. Solomon was a Nassau-based journalist who became by 1967 a member of the Parliament in the Bahamas.

Thank you - I've passed this information on. Some more on Mr Solomon here:

I am the administrator of the Edward Quinn Archive, Quinn was my uncle. I am pleased to be a member now of this forum and would like to thank you for your help in identifying personalities in the photographs.

Here's another one.

Does anyone know who is the man with the Brylcreem hairstyle in the white shirt between Toulo de Graffenried and Fangio (Monaco 1950)?

There's an Argentinain logic to it being Pian, but it doesn't look much like him. I'm not sure it's Sommer either.  Robert Manzon perhaps, or Johnny Claes?

De Graffenreid, Fangio, Bira and Trintignant are all, as far as I can see, in racing overalls, whereas I don't think 'the second man' is, is he? He may not be a driver.  Or are those his rather stylish racing clothes?

Yes, I noticed the lack of coveralls, too. If he's not a driver, fat chance of identifying him given that his face is barely visible! :(

Ye of little faith.  :D

From Adam Ferrington: I am pretty certain it is Goffredo Zehender. He was not driving at the meeting, but could well have been there as a ‘bystander’ as he was very much still part of the milieu and returned, briefly, to racing a year or two later.

Piàn is here and Sommer here at Monaco 1950, both were participating.

I am sure it is Zehender as Adam writes. Many thanks to all for helping.

What a wonderful collection of photos.

Edward Quinn was clearly a very talented photographer of people.

Thank you to the Edward Quinn Archive for bringing them to our attention on TNF.

There are a great set of images for the 1978 Monaco Grand Prix.

I wonder who these two gentlemen are with Alan Jones, and Rolf Stommelen?

The Warsteiner CEO is probably Albert Cramer. It´s not Manfred "Manni" Oettinger who was famous for the Warsteiner hospitality.

The guy talking with Alan Jones might be an Arrows team member due to the logo on his jacket.

Also in the same set, Carlos Reutemann is talking to a young Peter Windsor.

Yes, Cramer! Thanks, Reinhard, I was obviously confusing the names of those two principal Warsteiner figureheads, Cramer and Oettinger - the latter was much more famous and well liked in the paddock  ;)

I've just got hold of 'Monaco Motor Racing - Edward Quinn Motorsport 1950 - 1965' edited by Wolfgang Frei.

What a brilliant array of photos covering the drivers, team owners and racing cars (plus Monaco celebs) of the era.

Worthy of your bookshelf (as long as it has adjustable shelves, it's tall) plus you don't mind the 'arty' large white boarder look and minimal text.

I have the recently-published "Grand prix de Monaco. L'âge d'or, 1950-1965" edited by Glénat. Does anyone know if it's the same book, but in French? I don't think so, given the differences in terms of pages, size and (most importantly) price:

  • Wolfgang Frei: English/German. 208 pages. 290x340 mm. 98 eur.
  • Glénat: French. 240 pages. 242x322 mm. 50 eur

What is your opinion of the Glénat book, a_tifoosi? The price sounds enticing.

Given the retail price, totally recommended!
