Christian Horner recently announced that RBR would continue to ‘work with’ Honda until ‘23, when RBR will assume sole responsibility for the development of their in-house power unit.
Given that Honda are effectively ‘walking away’ from F1, one has to wonder why they have agreed to this tie-up for two years? Ultimately it has to be purely financial, so it will be interesting to see how much of RBRs budget is flowing towards Honda over the next couple of years. Of course they have the benefit of utilising the Alpha Tauri budget also, but one can’t help but think there’s some trick accounting going on in the RBR office to maximise their power unit development over the next two years…

Why would they need trick accounting, there’s no budget cap on engine development.

Just Honda being Honda. If next year’s engine sucks, they’ll be leaving again.

Honda probably want to keep a tie with F1 so that their engineers stay familiar with the technologies being used. It costs them little, considering that they've already made the big investments and are writing them off anyway.
