An interesting article appeared in the Daily Telegraph online a day or two ago, and it's still there today, in their sadly rapidly deteriorating Cars section. It's about skilled model maker Glen English who produces scale models of interesting historic cars and motorcycles, the photo below is one example, which all TNFs will recognise instantly as an Alfa 158.

The standard of workmanship is immediately impressive, but as a one-time professional model maker myself, what amazed me was that he's made no fewer than fifty of these, every one identical, while I was doing vaguely similar work, I rarely made more than single examples of any subject. So far he's sold 47 of these lovely 1/8th scale 158 replicas. Previously he produced a run of 50 1/4th scale 500cc Manx Nortons and sold every one of them at a price of £3,250, one of them to a man who would be a strong contender for the title of "World's Greatest ever Biker", John McGuinness. Even more impressive is the fact that Glen himself has been an active bike racer himself, and has raced competitively in Isle of Man TTs in past years.

Glen's next productions will be Jim Clark's Lotus 25, and Brough Superior motorcycles among others, I'm sure he'll already have waiting lists for both. I had come across mentions of Glen's name and model making skills several times over the years, but so far I haven't seen examples of his work, at least as far as I'm aware. You can judge the quality for yourselves from the photo, search out the DT article yourselves for more information, including photos of his gorgeous scale model MV Agusta .500-3.

As someone who in his teenage years used to make models, mainly plastic kits which I tried to "improve", I am in awe of people who can scratch build models of this quality. The detail: the spoked wheels, treaded tyres and all those louvres, is just astonishing.
This is real engineering in miniature. One of the most amazing examples is this,

Ireland's John McGuinness

If Ireland are claiming him then I want Joey Dunlop in exchange.

Yes, you're right of course, but surely having "Guinness" in the name that makes him at least an honorary Irishman... The McGuiness "Lunch with" piece in Motor Sport some time ago was one of the most enjoyable ever. Of course, I really knew all along that John came from Morecambe, I've corrected my original post, and I agree that Joey Dunlop ranks more or less equal with John.
