I wonder if any teams had enough time to develop a new rear wing.  As it stands, no team has failed the test in Brazil or Qatar. But if the stewards are permitting you to fail a test, why would you pass it?

There wont be any consequences if teams fail the new tests: https://racingnews36...rear-wing-tests

Hurray, more contreversy! This season is awesome! :)

Makes perfect sense.  Give teams time to adjust to the new tests like they were given earlier in the season.  Seems fair.

So they can adjust it for 2022.

What I mean is, the stewards have said we will turn a blind eye to this test. So a team should be trying to fail it.  I think without the cost cap we would have seen teams show up with wings that failed the test in Saudi Arabia. If it's worth as much as RB think, teams should be falling over themselves to fail it.

They still have to pass this year's test. That's all that matters for this year. This other test, is nothing more than a test of next year's proposed test. Testing this year's wings with next year's test, will give F1 an idea of whether not they on the right track to determining the Mercedes trick, or at least getting RB off their case.

Well, then the argument that it takes time to adjust would no longer hold any value, does it? If you can work to fail the test in two weeks time, you would also be able to work to comply to it.

If anyone fails the new 'non-mandatory' test, they are at risk for being protested. The party protesting will refer to the general rule regarding the requirement of bodywork needed to be rigidly secured etc.

The protest will (in my view) likely not be upheld, but it will become another legal drama...

Will they reveal the results of the test to the world, only to the team, or keep it completely secret?

That's a good question. I think the answer is, we don't know.

I don't see how that's the case, if any wing passes the current tests, it will be deemed legal and there will be nothing to protest.

Yeah I agree.

But that's not how Toto Wolff and Horner have viewed it.

Wolff said Mercedes contemplated protesting RB if they'd run their 'flexi' wing in Baku, despite the new test being introduced the following race. RB also contemplated protesting Mercedes in Qatar if they'd run their (alleged) flexi wing, even though the wing met all the tests currently in place.

The reason is that the principle of the rule is that bodywork must be rigidly secured (in principle no flexing allowed, but we all know this is bs). Nevertheless, it's an opening for a team to lodge a protest. The protest will not be granted.

RB didn't protest because they felt Mercedes didn't run the same RW as in Brazil (whether this is true / accurate is another matter).

Honestly, it seems RBR didn't protest because the only 'evidence' they could muster was some apparent scratches.

They had nothing to protest.

It's a lot of hot air tbh.

Could be, or it could be that they were simply less concerned about what they were seeing in the speed trap data in Qatar.

Huummm... more likely they've realised it wasn't the wing that gave Merc the jump in performance.
