What if Lewis wins the championship thanks to his Silverstone move?

If the points margin were small enough so that the Silverstone move could be considered to have been decisive for the championship, how would we perceive his 8th title?

Would we celebrate him as a worthy champion? Or would we lament his fairly minor penalty at Silverstone?

I was inspired to start this topic thanks to this somewhat similar speculative topic:

Setting myself up to be swarmed by a legion of posters, but unless Max does something stupid like try to take Lewis out over the next two races then I will view Max in my own head as the '21 champion irrespective of who actually lifts the trophy. All means nothing obviously.

Did you see Brazil? Was Max’s penalty harsh enough for missing the apex and pushing Lewis off the track? Oh wait, he didn’t get one did he?

I'm not going to go that far, but I agree with the sentiment. I think Max has far and away been the best driver this year. I'm not going to discuss Monza/Silverstone as those are controversial, but outside of those events lady luck has definitely been cruel to Max. The events at Baku, Hungary and even Imola have made this a close race, where realistically Max should already be about 30-40 points ahead.

What if Max wins due to his Monza dry humping?

Or the Spa "race".

I mean, I am all for "what if's". In my mind, Hill should've had that 94-title, and with less pressure, he'd have a good chance on the 95 title, which makes the 96 one a slam dunk, and he stays with Williams for a 4th title in 97.

Oh, this isn't the "what if" thread?

This thread is pathetic.  I remember when F1 fans were hard-core racing fans. This thread belies all of that.

It’s done and dusted.

Nothing can change it and nothing will. It only is nice for the history books to show who was the best driver this year. But the champion in points will be the champion in points.

I don’t think it’ll be his best title, far from it. But they all count.

Without been taken out at Silverstone and Hungaroring Max would be champ right now. That's the ugly truth.

Hungaroring probably was a certain P2 (or P1). So that would be 15 points lost there?

Days will pass by, seasons will change, society will go on. Looking back Lewis will be hailed as a worthy champion. Only in a small corner of the internet resistance will prevail: remember Silverstone!

You could pick apart every single World Championship and say ‘what if he had/hadn’t done x’.

That’s racing.

While the thread referenced in the OP might appear similar, it passes by virtue of having some merit as to whether there might have be some rule exploitation going on, reminiscent of Brabham’s fuel in 1983 or similar.

However, this just comes across as an effort to start an argument.

They had an accident at Silverstone, Lewis was penalised (whether you think that penalty was fair was discussed to death already), he served his punishment, and took advantage of the rules to win. This has happened a hundred times in different seasons to different drivers.

Thread closed.
