Just 51 days until we see action at the 'Motul Pole Award' qualifying session for the 2022 Daytona 24 Hours.

Aaaaand we have a certain renowned someone looking at a new campaign in our favorite comfy sportscar series...

"Every year I try to make one or two races in cars," Rossi said in an interview posted this week on the IMSA SportsCar Championship's Twitter feed.

"From next year I will race GT cars in endurances races and championships; at the moment it is not decided [in which series] yet."

The 42-year-old hinted that there is a strong possibility that he could end up racing in the North American IMSA series in 2022, saying "there is a very interesting championship in the US called IMSA," before mentioning its season-opening Daytona 24 Hours fixture in January.

Rossi and IMSA...

Valentino Rossi  +  I M S A

Thanks for starting the topic OvDrone.

Valentino at Daytona? That would be special and fun.

Palou, Dixon, van der Zande, Earl Bamber, Sebastien Bourdais, and Alex Lynn.  In two of the best prepared cars on the grid.  This will be a very spicy dish.

I’m trying to figure out my ROAR / 24 Hr attendance. I want to flag, but that limits fan-like interactions with the teams. I expect hotels to already close to capacity.

Especially if Rossi is there. The Italian dude who used to race motorcycles.

He never did the 200 (with good reason), so this is the closest it'll get.

Looks like Vasser Sullivan will run one Lexus in GTD, and one in GTD Pro. Unless I'm mistaken, that means we are at 5 full-season confirmed entries for GTD Pro between the Corvettes, BMW RLL, and now the Lexus. Any others I'm missing? I hope Weathertech end up running 2 Porsches with one in Pro for a full season kinda like their GTLM effort at Petit.

The Plaid Crew (aka Pfaff) is supposed to move up to GTD Pro.

Paul Miller is moving away from Lambos, because Lambo wants to run Pro I think, which meant one of their drivers couldn't go with. Or something?

Hopefully we'll see an NSX too since Acura could spend the money on it, which they couldn't in normal GTD? I mean, Pro basically allows factory funded cars right?

IMSA sure is on an upswing, 2022 isn't even going to be the big year for LMDh but they've had tons of great news for LMP2 and the GTD classes. Daytona is going to be very exciting. I'll miss Mazda, though, and it feels weird that we'll really only have 2 types of car capable of winning overall (Caddy, Acura).

Pfor Pfaff pfans, https://sportscar365...-winning-season

I have to say I am very disappointed that Zacharie Robichon will not be driving for Pfaff in 2022 but for Wright Motorsports, the evil team that booted The Christina a few years ago.

Credit has to go to those who make it so much easier to make entries in the US compared to EU. The the more the merrier.

Never thought I'd see Aston Martins racing in a US series!

I struggle to think of a year Aston Martins weren't running in a US series, since the first Prodrive cars 20-odd years ago...

Also, we are losing Lambos, but getting Bimmers in the exchange.  PMR are going to run an M3 from Sebring onward:

Somewhere, I have a picture of Pedro Lamy I took in the Mosport paddock. Tomas Enge autographed a picture of himself in my 2002 Autocourse.

CarBahn is running a full-year Lambo and T3 is doing at least Daytona.

Oh, I felt plenty old typing it, but I had to admit it.  I guess if you only pay attention to GTs at a minimal level it's harder to grasp that the biggest non-WEC series is IMSA, by prestige and manufacturer priority, and in some respects, it remains a much bigger deal than WEC.  And any brand with a sports car program is going to ensure they are running in North America before they make sure they run a full European series, unless they don't sell in North America.

What class do cars move from being modified (spec?) road vehicles to dedicated racing cars in look alike shells?

From reading is it right to assume in the US it's only GT-AM where they are modifying road cars? (GT3/4 Europe?).

In my opinion, the GTD cars are full blown race cars.

Mmmm...

This is tricky, because a GT3 car is based on the road going version and I think keeps some parts? The NSX shell is pulled off the assembly line in Ohio where the road cars are made. But a Porsche 911 in GTE spec is a full blown from the ground up race car. As much as a previous era DTM car would be.

But it would be a lot of work to buy a road car and turn it into a GT3 car. A lot. Though there are a lot of GT3 cars not available in GT4 version for whatever reason despite it being a 'more simple' class.

There will be no BOP difference between the GTD and GTD Pro at Daytona. So basically it's a 35 car battle for the class win. Insanity, the good kind.

Only shame is no Audis on the grid in GTD.

Sportscar racing is heading to a new golden age I think.

I have to say I’m really looking forward to IMSA this year. Might be my number 1 series for this year. It’s great to see so many GT cars out there and hopefully most of the pro cars stick around for a full season. It’s only right as well that they have the same BOP I don’t see why it should be different to the classes you see in GTWC or IGTC.
