Things I learned catching up on MP IndyCar podcasts.

1.  The Rosenqvist saga was driven in part this year by personal issues with his girlfriend, who is no longer in the picture.  But when he was willing to return to Europe, it was largely because she was homesick.

2.  O'Ward and Rosenqvist have a genuinely close friendship, one of the tightest between teammates Pruett states he's seen in years.

3.  Kiel's departure caught McLaren by surprise.  There is no obvious internal replacement.

4.  Since Kiel came up with Schmidt and is family with Mike Hull, MP broadly hinted McLaren's (emphatically not AMSP's) buccaneer approach to paddock relations may have played a role.  Stay tuned.

5.  Rosenqvist is highly regarded among teams and, had he been available, would have easily found a home.  Juncos was interested, as was RLL.  Surprised there are openings at RLL?  Me too, but nothing else was said, other than that MP hopes to have Jack Harvey on a future "Catching Up" podcast, so my guess is it would have been to replace Graham.

He did mention in an article (EDIT: Page 2 of the Mailbag https://racer.com/20...september-21/2/) that Harvey would have been paid out if Rosenqvist had become available, but that since he wasn't, it didn't arise as a possibility, although third party rumours said it was on.

But he also stressed that there were many fathers to that failure at RLL this year, even if it is claimed to be an orphan.

We only ever had the "is he under option to McLaren or not" drama which doesn't seem personal life related?

It's background to a saga with many moving parts. It's not the magic key. ;)

Yeah, I had seen that.
Add me to the list of people prematurely kicking Graham upstairs. :well:

Before his IRL stint as Competition Director, Brian Barnhart had two Al Unser, Jr. Indy 500 wins as a mechanic. That indicates he performed in his duties impressively enough to be part of Team Penske's 1994 season, which is remembered as being quite successful. He may have had plenty of issues in his IRL managerial role, but I don't think that the decades old events should dictate what BB is doing now in his return role on the pitbox.

I had forgotten his time at Penske.

I guess because of his IRL role I perceived him as being a Foyty redneck type, but yes, his CV is more than his time doing that.

If his decades old issues don't count, why would his decades old successes?

He's fine. But sometimes the logic of these threads...

Some people are suited to certain roles better than others. Obviously Harding, Andretti and now McLaren looked at his successes in his team roles to make the decisions to hire him. I'm guessing he'll never again be in a similar series role.

Agreed. To me, he's an illustration that just because you're very good at one job, you'll be great at another.

Another case of this is Alain Prost: World champion driver (one of the best F1 drivers in history), terrible at being an F1 team principal.

Having started watching IndyCar after Barnhart’s widely panned tenure in race control, I was expecting disaster when he appeared amongst the teams, but he has surprised me and won races with as much consistency as can be expected from anyone at Andretti. I think the McLaren move is a promotion and one well-earned.

FLB - you, me and our warped logic.... I always thought teams hired off-the-street wankers with no racing experience on their resume.

It might be more fun for us if they did sometimes. Forget success ballast, let’s play with the human element.

“Josef, after 5 podiums in a row we’re going to have to slow you down. So you’ve got a completely baked mechanical engineering undergrad with a half bag of Cheetos doing your race strategy this weekend.”

Careful..

Joey Barnes may read this and create a reality show based on that very idea.

I haven't watched any race this season yet, workload will diminish in next weeks so I am planning to watch the entire season over the winter months

Question: is there any race I should really skip? (Any boring, meaningless event?)

Barnhart did a great job with Harding Racing. He shouldn't have been a race director but there have been more misses than hits in that role, to put it mildly.

For Dutch viewers: Veekay was in Race Cafe last Friday night on Ziggo, worth a watch.

Some snippets from the top of my head:
- no brainer to sign for ECR, the Palou saga was half a chance he wouldn't risk his relations in the team for. Other teams ahead already full or not hiring. Multiple year deal signed. Very comfortable in the team.
- ECR landed a big sponsor in January, but it was too late into the winter to improve the car for this year. Working hard this winter to finally make the car better and setup results more stable.
- On Indy500 crash: they suspect a rear suspension part broke, because there are sparks at the rear on the footage just before the crash.
- Gaps are tiny because almost everyone has 'played out' this car.
- Keeps it diplomatic about the strength of his teammate.
- has to improve himself to prevent those last part of the race throwaways.
- more stuff I don't remember :p

Edit

- Is promised the onboard camera coming season.

Was the situation regarding Jumbo discussed in any way?

Nope, but I was watching with half an eye and only tuned in for VK. The show is every week (used to be their F1 show before they lost the rights to Viaplay), so it was perhaps in the show the week before. Jumbo has said it has nothing to do with them, it is about Van Eerd and his relation with the prime suspect.

Come to think of it, his crash was very similar to the one Newgarden had.

Cruel Irony of Unintended Consequences Dept.:  "Fixing" Texas Motor Speedway for NASCAR screwed it up for IndyCar.  But NASCAR might just hate it more.

You know you've really achieved something when every racing series you host would like to tear you down and start from scratch.

That is a pretty spectacular way of going wrong.

Although the mooted solutions would also end the track as an Indycar location.

No.  Looks like we're going to be seeking another oval fairly soon.

Psst, IndyCar... There's an oval a 20-minute walk from me. Granted, it's 1/5 of a mile and the grandstand seats ~200 people, but seriously, think about it, yeah? Cheers.

Also, 2023 schedule to be released in about an hour.

2023 schedule has 17 races, no conflicts with Sebring or Le Mans, and otherwise looks very familiar.

So it seats twice the number that usually show up to an Indycar oval race.

Last word was the Feb Cup date will be the last date with the Fontana superspeedway configuration.  They will reportedly start the remodel after the Cup race.  The pandemic delayed the first attempt and the recovery made getting construction material and people more difficult and expensive.

We should probably start a new 2023 thread, but I really wonder about Texas.  They'll be lucky to have 10 people in the stands!!   Why go back there???????????  Just don't get it.

(and after watching the cup disaster this past weekend, the tin tops aren't that happy with the place either...)

(as for BB,  I just remember all the "love" between our late friend Robin Miller and BB!!)
