This is the last place I would've expected chess spoilers. I was literally about to hit play on Jerry's analysis as I would close this tab :)

Obviously he didn't see Nepo's last minute penalty that enforced the follow on at the final hole. He needed snookers.

I know this will sound mean, but I'd love Mercedes to get it wrong and to be down in the pack next season, because it would be fascinating. It's what's always happened - Williams dominate, Williams lose Newey and Renault, Ferrari dominate, Ferrari lose Schumacher and slip back, Red Bull dominate, Red Bull drop off....if Mercedes were able to maintain or extend their domination into 2022, it would be incredibly impressive from their perspective, but God it would be tedious. I don't mind them staying up front - just not maintaining dominance. Please.

It's not mean. While I have nothing but admiration for the job Mercedes have done, the new rules are an opportunity for someone to get it right....and someone to get it wrong. Anything could happen.

Come on guys. I mean a truly terrible car. Not a poor start but capable of running up front after a few races.

As an Alonso fan it is truly painful to see people calling the 2009 McLaren a bad car. You know he's had it good when the worst car he's driven was at worst the 3rd best and probably the 2nd best car in the second half of the season.

What's the point in seeing Hamilton in a truly terrible car?

Yea, it was a long way off the 2008 car but the 2009 field was so close that a driver could find themselves 0.8 off the top time and get knocked out in Q1. That means that relatively marginal gains could leap a car up the grid pretty dramatically, which is exactly what Mclaren did when they sorted that car.

I think the default will be to favor Lewis.  Not in a malicious way, but rather just because that's been the (earned) habit of the last few years and they probably expect him to come out on top anyway.

But within the first few races, if Russell looks immediately competitive, I doubt they would hold him back and they will start to pay more attention to him.  Bottom line is I think it's entirely up to Russell how this plays out.  If he proves unable to challenge, then he'll get as much support as Bottas did.  If he lays down the gauntlet to Lewis from the beginning, he'll effectively force then to take him seriously.  I think it's always been like that

Just like it pains me to hear how the 2012 Ferrari was a shitbox.
