On a podium together with boxer Canelo Alvarez, I don't think he's sober yet. :drunk:. Oh, and boobies on his hat.

I love Canelo, he's become the best boxer of his generation since getting schooled by Mayweather.

Go for it, Max. Young, rich, World Champion. Party hard.

The poor kid got abandoned at a petrol station, he paid his dues.

What does that have to do with anything?

Wow! Of all the subjects to invoke Godwin’s Law against. Just… wow!

The rest of us had moved on too.

Big wow from me…

Another random Max clip appeared on my YouTube recommendations. It's probably been posted before. It's Max talking about how seriously he takes sim racing and how the sim-only drivers drive the cars as they would need to be driven in real life.

Some fascinating comments there. There has always been this talk about the "Playstation" generation of F1 drivers. But to hear one of the top F1 drivers of the current era talk about sims in this way is new. I don't think we've ever had that direct connection between real life and simulator before. And it's not just Max of course. Lando, George, Charles... and many of the other younger drivers have full sim setups. Perhaps that is now the key to being the best. No longer is it just about on track testing and factory simulator work. Maybe the real work is going to be done in their homes between races.

Fascinating.

It sure is much more ‘practice’ time than old school drivers have. I firmly believe it’s one of the reasons why Verstappen is much faster on the pace on new tracks etc.

Didnt he mention he practiced 70 hours for serious sim racing events? That’s ‘track time’ not one single driver gets in the real world.

There must be a lot of drivers who practice on sims that much who don't get the results Verstappen does!

It also makes me think of how a lot of top soccer players reportedly play a great deal of FIFA or Pro Evo, quite possibly because it's one of the few fun and social things they can do when not training or studying tactics that don't carry the risk of injury or loss of physical sharpness or being photographed. Obviously racing sims are quite a bit closer to the real thing than FIFA is.

One more because it's bonkers. Max practicing passing around the outside of Blanchimont in iRacing four days before he replicated the move in the race.

Who was the defending driver in that clip btw? Amazing car control from both.

I can make that pass at Blanchimont in an F1 sim on iRacing (largely dependent on the willingness of the guy on the inside being cooperative), but I can’t imagine putting myself on the outside at that corner in anything heavier than a Radical (again, just imagining, probably wouldn’t want to be there on anything faster than a Vespa IRL). Great fun on a sim, giant juevos and mega-pucker factor tolerance required in a real race car.

I’ve watched him race in big sim events against the very best sim racers in the world.  He’s world class in sim racing in addition to his obviously decent real world racing skills.

He said in the most recent interview with Coulthard that it takes him much much more time to be competitive in simracing compared to real world racing.

I guess both because it’s a bit different, but as well because the level in top simracing is incredibly high.

You mean the simracing part? The real life one is Felipe Nasr, the simracing part is with Atze Kerkhof, who runs the Redline team that Verstappen is in. Lando Norris was also part of Team Redline before but I'm not sure if he still is now.

Atze Kerkhof has recently become Driver Performance coach for Alfa Romeo F1, purely from his sim racing background, so it shows he's a big name in sim racing (more as a driver coach than as a driver I'd say) and also shows real F1 teams using that knowledge from the sim racing experts now.

I meant the real part but the rest is interesting too, thanks!
