Until the teams figure out how to use them to generate downforce... why did they get banned in the first place? I can not recall...

I can't remember why they were banned. I thought I'd heard that all teams would have to run the wheel covers next year. It wasn't clear if they'll get to design their own wheel covers or whether they'll have to run a standard design. Does anyone know?

The areo considerations will go totally against the 13 inch wheels in comparison to 18

So engineers would certainly choose the 18

Just because the engineers hypothetically would prefer 18'' to be the standard doesn't mean that it would be the choice if wheel diameter was free to choose for all teams. If wheels of another diameter were faster but more difficult to work with, the teams would all go in that direction.

LEDs generate very little heat. Too little to matter.

this is F1, even 'too little' (which implies some) is worth chucking a few grand at

Okay, now movable LEDs or bending LEDs!

Ban them already!

F1 for all these years went for the fastest lightest possible solution, now they have a slow tyre and heavy wheels and suspension.

I don't think 13 inch wheel and suspension are really the fastest way to build a car - there's a reason why other categories have went with even lower profile tyres than what F1 has.
The wheel covers also have an interesting side effect of significantly reducing drag (and as a result wake) so the cars will be faster in a straight line and more stable.

If the rules were 600 kgs with driver, V10/8 engine and any tyre size, what would teams have chosen?

And Mercedes will buy a LED manufacturing company to conduct research on the most aerodynamically efficient LED patterns outside the budget cap.

ah the good ol' budget cap, where, in an engine formula one can throw engines at the situation

I think that looks awesome. If those light bars are programmed correctly, you could display messages and advertisements on the wheels. It would be a way for Mclaren to add a revolving door of sponsors to the car during the race

While ads could be possible, they would have to be controlled by the pits and AFAIK the pits are not allowed to control the car in any way shape or form, so I don't see that happening.

Pit: Lando, Lap 20 change ad setting to 'B'

Lando: WTF, I'm racing here.

Mclaren was the fastest mule car in both days.

You know what that means...

NOTHING.

Would not have to be controlled by the pits. Load a 90 minute montage to an onboard memory card and press play.

It is interesting, that Merc run so few laps compared to others on both days.

Maybe they already experimenting  and were trying out different suspension configs?

Imagine complaining about 18 inch rims.

Also I think Pirelli say these tyres will be easier to keep in the operating window and less likely to fail? But that may be wrong.

I can't wait to hear the moaning over the 2022 car if it's this bad over just the wheel change.

F1 twenty years late to the party on this one.

That’s a proper looking race car by the way.

They say the tires will suffer less from thermal degradation. If that happens, probably we will see a return of the one-stop patterns that we used to see in 2010.

I heard, that they are planning to replace qualifyings with a new spin-off called "Pimp my F1 car".

They had Aston Martin & McLaren doing laps too… could they use any of the 2022 PU? Unofficially of course…

We’ll see softer tyres in that case.

how is that possible

Shwartzman, the only driver on track on Wednesday using the traditional 13-inch tyres, and 2021 machinery, put Haas in a rare position at the top of the leaderboard with a 1:25.348, giving him the eighth fastest time overall across the two days. (Planet F1)

Sooner or later they are going realize that there is too much tyre. I hope they reduce it to 310 at all 4 corners just as in the WEC. I also hope FIA mandates a common supplier for WEC and F1.
