The festivities are in full swing, Verstappen, Horner, Marko etc are in the picture but there's one man who I think deserves enormous respect but usually keeps a low profile: Adrian Newey. Aerodynamicist, designer, engineer, technical officer, whatever his title is.
 
"Newey is the only designer to have won constructors' titles with three different Formula One teams"
 
"Newey's designs also won the 1985 and 1986 CART (Indycar) titles."

I've also read it, but I think it came a bit too early? 

 

I would have liked to read about the last few years as well, especially 2021. I'm pretty sure that a lot was going on behind the scenes this year and I desperately want to have a peek. :D

I think you're even forgetting the 1996/1997 WDCs, absolutely remarkable achievements, especially since he never worked with either Schumacher or Hamilton. Since the early 90s, almost everything was won by either Newey, Schumacher or Hamilton.

As for Newey, I hope he can build Redbull a car which they can be fighting for the wins from the start again in 2022.

You forgot the driver titles of '96 & "97 ?

He is great and thanks to him some of my favorite drivers have won many championships - Hill, Hakkinen and Vettel. Bless him!

If you wanted to add to the list of title-winning Newey cars, there's also the "lobster claw" March 82G and its successors, the 83G and 84G. This series of cars won IMSA GTP titles in 1983 and 1984 with Al Holbert and then Randy Lanier.

You mention the 2 CART titles but maybe of more importance at those days was the Indy 500.

86  Bobby Rahal, March 86C Won after caution flag brought him back into contention with 6 laps to go

87 Al Unser Sr, March 86C Won with a year-old chassis design

I recently recycled all of my old F1 Racing magazines, but there was a funny headline and lead story that made me laugh when having a final browse.

It was from winter 2008/09 along the lines of...

 

 

Is Newey Finished?

Can RedBull really step-up to join the leading pack?

 

 

And here we are 9 titles later (5x driver; 4x constructor) going into new rules again!  :eek:

Can't get enough of Newey and Honda. They've turned into a dream team this year.

 

Just as Honda pull out... maybe Horner can join them.

My understanding was that he isn't as hands on at Red Bull as he was at Williams and then McLaren and he heads a large design team rather than designs the cars himself as an individual. Is there anything in that?

What puts in in perspective for me is that he appears in my, now retired, dad's university graduation programme.

I just finished his book. Its available in audio too. He did not like the hybrid era regulations and thought about retirement. He will probably stick around for the ground effect era

Now about that one there is a bit more to tell.

 

 

 

It was only because of two failing very late and/or at the last moment failing '87 designed/built chassis.

 

Roberto Guerrero's March 87C  and.....

 

Of all things.....

Mario Andretti's Lola T8700, engineered of oll people by????????

the next generation off cars must be right up his alley, but he's not that keen on hybrids, but they really are a thing of the past also, not like Newey : )

Only Chapman and Murray come close.

I think Newey has always converted his driver's into WDC's, that's saying something.
Best hire Horner ever made, and when he did it he paid this guy more than the drivers.

That is a good list Sterzo. But probably with Chapman the tide changed and aero-chassis started to dominated the balance. I would also add Rory Byrne to the list of top aero-chassis designers.

But Adrian is a legend. Still using pencil not a 3d cad mouse.

I do belive and agree with his statement. Mercedes had to bring some 2022 engine stuff forward to claw back into the tittle contention.

Wasn't Uhlenhaut more in the race engineering domain rather than design, though?

As you go back in time, both the knowledge of what makes a racing car quick and the complexity of the cars reduces. It was much easier to design a whole racing car single handedly in the early days.

Murray, Newey and to a lesser extent Chapman, had to deal with one thing that didn't exist in earlier times and which is as much or more complex than engines: aerodynamics.

 

Also Newey, to a certain extent, has to be implicated in the design of the engine, because in modern F1cars, chassis and engine are interconnected.

I thought it was obvious the RB was faster till maybe the last 4 races, on balance.

Thank you'll find they have since about 1967

But yes, Neweys genius is in packaging and aero. Its the biggest affector of F1 performance by far.

Impossible as engine upgrades are forbidden, I know Honda worked miracles to bring their 2022 engine design for this year

It is possible. Its about timing of homologatin process. Ferrari did it by leaving it late into the season. They were just more open about it.

How about James Key the man made the cheap car win.

It is for me.
I first met him when he was squeezing tiny drivers into the LeytonHouse at Phoenix. Then about six years later at Williams.

The guy has the most charming and soothing voice I had ever heard and to hear him convince drivers that they drive to the strengths of the engineering and aero innovations was tantamount to being sold snake oil…..

Except it wasn’t snake oil at all.
It was the future.
