Toto and Lewis Magnanimous in Defeat:

I wonder if Bottas is allowed to go. What's next: banning Mercedes racing cars from the Gala? Oh wait...
Anyway I am sure Verstappen and Horner will show up. Maybe even Masi!

Poor ol' Allison drew the short straw. Reminds me of when Van Halen was inducted into the RnRHoF, and Sammy Hagar and Michael Anthony were the only two members to show.

Toto & Lewis look like little kids in kindergarten now who haven't been given candy.

Rencken on the attack:
Dieter Rencken called the company’s reaction “unsporting.” Rencken said that the FIA will need to deploy all their weapons to ensure that Mercedes obeys the sporting regulations.
Mercedes won the F1 constructors’ Championship and both driver and team titles in Formula E, but it does not seem enough for them as they failed to show up to the FIA’s event on Tuesday. The Gala will crown Max Verstappen as the Drivers’ Champion and Mercedes as Constructors’ Champions, with both drivers and their respective team bosses required to attend.
Furthermore, he said that Lewis’ behaviour is all very well to go and congratulate somebody on the podium and do the odd TV interview on track. But the media is the one that asks hard questions and he was not there. Now, that is a breach of the sporting regulations. Moreover, the F1 expert added that the absence of the Brackley-based team could be because Toto Wolff does not know how to lose, but that is no excuse.

Is the Gala even important? It seems everyone was always happy not to be the 3rd in the championship so they don't have to go to the Gala... Or is it pissing on new Champion Verstappen parade?

What is hypocritical about not going to the Gala, specifically? Did Wolff previously demand people go but now he chooses not to go himself?

It actually is. They will have to pay penalty for that. I kid you not.

Championship has been tarnished anyway, the wording used in the FIA media statement.
Exactly paper championship.

the way I view this is thus.....having removed the threat to appeal the Abu Dhabi GP, this is the last chance for Toto, Mercedes and Hamilton to make a gesture which shows they feel aggrieved.
And they have every right to feel aggrieved.

I don't doubt it, but lambasting Hamilton for not appearing at this event due to it being required in the Sporting Regulations, yet not saying anything AFAIK regarding the Race Director inadvertently going against other Sporting Regulations in his handling of the last few laps in Abu Dhabi through a desire to finish the race under green flags come what may seems rather hypocritical.

I don't know....but what I do know is that he used to write very sensible articles, some of the best of modern times, and now about a third of what he writes seems to be utterly bizarre made up stuff. Like the article quoted in this thread.
I have suspected that it's not actually him writing some of it. But that would be just as odd...hiring a "ghost author" to write stuff for him who has a different style and set of opinions.

Does the WDC runner up have to appear? My knowledge of these rules is hazy so I could be wrong, but I thought only the WDC was obliged.
Otherwise fine Lewis $10k and hope nobody notices.

I haven't read much of his work since he stopped having a column in the print copy of Autosport, biut I agree, back then he was one of the first people whose writings I went to.

Dear Dieter: Show us the rules.
The team boss are not required to attend. Drivers finishing in the top three are. However, for the constructor there is no mention in the sporting regulations.

Personally I think it's not the best choice to boycott the Gala, but here we are.
I was going to say it would be good to go, hold their heads high, speak to none of the press or do the photoshoots. Although I also understand the snub. Then I realised nobody would be talking about this end of season FIA jaunt if not for this. It's a relatively unknown event - I've watched F1 for 30+ years and only found out this was a thing five or six years ago. Drunk Kimi has been the only interesting thing at it, ever. In fact drunk Lewis and Toto trashing it and being ejected may have been even funnier. We'll never know now.

You are looking at the 2nd issue of the 2020 2021 regulations.
If you look at the latest from 2021 (issue 13) it is there.
EDIT: I realized it is the second issue of the 2021 regulations, that was published in 2020, however, there has been further updates that have been published from issue 3 to the latest, issue 13.

Daimler and Toto own the same amount of equity in the F1 team.
Not sure they can force him to do anything that easily, or whether they would want to.

Lewis should go to the gala and take whatever trophy they give him and hand it over to Masi straight away then walk out.
Lewis McSavage...

You are looking at the 2nd issue of the 2020 regulations.
It is headed "2021 Sporting Regulations".
But it is a FIA product so not surprising if it isn't correct.
Daimler and Toto own the same amount of equity in the F1 team.
No they don't. Daimler own 'more than 50% but less than 75%' and Toto the rest. Probably one third?

But, according to article 15.3, the race director can overrule the procedure.

To be honest, I don't see the need for 2nd and 3rd place to be there, anyway.
I can see why 1st should be there, but if the other two aren't then who cares?
