A very pleasant bloke - I played cricket with him.  So young - and suddenly now so long ago...

Saw his first in Thundersports and later a number of times in Group C. His inputs with Radio Le Mans were always a hoot. I can't believe it's been such a long time ago.

I’m too young to have seen him in his BTCC pomp but I do remember his amazing drive in the wet at Silverstone in 1998 where he kept it on the island and didn’t put a foot wrong, completely on rails as all the fancied runners spun off left right and centre. That Ford Mondeo was so uncompetitive but he made it work beautifully on that day. To be honest, looking back now that 1998 BTCC season is quite possibly my all-time favourite motor racing season and his incredible underdog Silverstone win tops any Nigel Mansell cameo as maybe the best moment of an incredible season.

To think that he only had another four years to live even at that point….I can’t believe it’s been such a long time. That era was absolutely magic across the Motorsport sphere but also cruelly took a lot of British Motorsport heroes - Steve Hislop, David Leslie, Richard Burns, Colin McRae, far too young.

I am afraid that McRae trashed his reputation by his actions He wasn't 'taken ' by anybody or any thing other than his own recklessness . Hero ? Hardly .

I don't want to hijack a thread on Will Hoy and get side tracked on Colin McRae but he is a hero to many, after Valentino Rossi I see more Colin McRae merchandise in everyday life than any other motorsport figure in the UK.

The Mondeo was a very competitive car in the wet, mainly due to the weight on the front of the car. Hence Mansell's star showing at Donington too.

Agree, Silverstone was by far the moment of the season for many. Gentleman Will deserved it too.

This is a thread about Will Hoy, who doesn't deserve the thread being hi-jacked about the accident of McRae.

To be honest I thought including Colin might get a comment or two, but so be it and it's not the point of the thread or the post.

ALL of those guys were heroes to many, many people.
