I always wanted a 1:18 scale replica Indycar or f1 car. So I made a purchase. For Indy, I wanted a speedway car and something with some name power. I ended up with this. Not the prettiest paint job by any means. But its Alonso.

I've only got one and I don't think I've even unboxed it.

My house has a few, all in their original boxes:

• A 1:18 scale model of Michael Schumacher's F-2003
• A 1:18 scale model of Scott Dixon's Target-liveried 2016 Indy car
• A 1:18 scale "championship edition" model of Josef Newgarden's Hitachi-liveried 2019 Indy car
• A signed 1:18 scale "championship edition" model of Scott Dixon's PNC Bank-liveried 2020 Indy car (he even went out of the way to Sharpie "clag" elsewhere on the livery!)
• A 1:18 scale Indy autograph car signed by Takuma Sato, which my wife got for winning the IndyCar fantasy game's 2020 Indy 500

I always wanted these in diecast 1:18.

Had the Lotus Tamiya as a very young kid and bought an onyx 1:43 Herbert at the British Grand Prix in 1994 from his mum, Jeff Gordon in 1:24 and came close to converting a Davidson BAR Monza test car.

I collect and build models of cars that Dan Gurney drove.  I have had no luck getting photos to post on this website, but my collection of approximately 150 models (in all scales) can be viewed here:

https://www.facebook...815317719358977

In 1/18 have several Exoto Cobras, Fort GT40 Mk2s and the Ford GT Mk4.

In Can-Am have GMP models including a 1966 Lola T-70, a 1967 Lola T-70 Mk3, the GMP McLaren M8B and the M8D, and a Ferrari 330P4.

In Trans-AM I have a 67 Cougar, 68 Mustang, 69 Mustang, and a 70 Barracuda.

In USAC I have Carousel 1 models of a 1965 Lotus 38, a 1966 Eagle, a 1967 Eagle while in F1 I have a Porsche 804 by AutoArt and an Eagle by carousel 1.

In World Sportscar competition I have a 1959 Ferrari 250TR, and a 1960 Maserati Birdcage by CMC which is stunning in its detail..

I am pretty happy with all these manufacturers, but there are errors on some models because they are based on restored vintage cars and do not have historic accuracy.  Still, I enjoy them all.

Nice. Post some pics of the collection sometime. So the 2016 Dixon one must be a aero kit era car. I have the chance to buy a new aero kit era car from my dealer. Some ppl don't like the look but it's part of history.

I have a few Indy 500 cars in 1/18, all Carousel:-

Bill Vukovich (Kurtis) 1953
Rodger Ward (Kurtis) 1956
Jim Rathmann (Watson) 1960
AJ Foyt (Trevis) 1961
Jim Clark (Lotus) 1966
Joe Leonard (Lotus) 1968
Bill Vukovich (Eagle) 1973

Also Foyt's championship dirt car (Meskowski) from 1964.

I think any future purchases will be 1/43 though, and more likely to be sportscars than Indy stuff.

Hello, Tom!  Nice to see that you're still around and posting here on TNF.

Re your Dan Gurney collection shown on Facebook(Meta), I believe that I see a sky-blue Lotus 23 carrying #1.  Where and when did DG race this one?

Also, Dan raced what I can only assume is the ex-Roger Penske Cooper Monaco at Mosport for the Player's 200 in 1963.  This is the one with the pointy rear deck fenders.  I hope that it makes it into your collection

Manfred-

Good to hear from you...I lurk more than I post on TNF because the knowledge base on here is out of my league!

The Lotus 23 than Dan drove was in the 1962 Nassau Speedweeks, chassis 23-S-41.  It was purchased from the factory and immediately shipped via airplane to Nassau, but it was a scramble to get it put together and it was a DNF in the two races it contested.  I modified a Spark model to make it.

You are right about the Cooper Monaco that Dan raced bearing #44 at Mosport.  Interesting article here:

https://petrolicious...onaco-at-a-time

I plan on building this car at some point.  I have a K&R Cooper Monaco kit that I will probably use but it will require a lot of modification for the pointy rear fenders as well as the nose.  MA Scale Models has a kit of the car when it was the Telar Special, and I have that one but it will need some modifications as well.  All together I have about 40 more models in various scales waiting in my workshop.  I am mainly doing the 1/43 kits at this time because my fine motor skills are fading.

Currently I am building the SMTS version of the 1963 Indy 500 Lotus 29s, both the #91 white w/blue car that was crashed in qualifying and the green/yellow #93 that was pressed into service  after that shunt.  I already have the race-day #93 in white/blue.  Someday I plan on doing the AMT 1/25 kit of the 29 as it looked in its preliminary test sessions at Indy and at the Ford Proving Grounds in Kingman, Arizona.

I have to confess that when I started my Gurney collection 15 years ago I never imagined the wide variety of cars that he raced...I am not sure if I will ever catch up.

Regards,

Tom

Do you guys know my friend Phil Dauphinee here in Victoria, BC?  He has built some nice Gurney models.  I think Gurney would have loved Phil's deuce tribute coupe.  Here is a link:

I don't have any 1:18 models - there's simply no room for them in a typically small English house.  I even have difficulty with my burgeoning 1:43 collection and some are in shoeboxes until I can find where to squeeze in a new cabinet and simultaneously keep "She, who must be obeyed" happy.

If I were limited to, say, 5 I honestly don't know which I would choose.

Vince-

I do know of Phil and his Gurney models (and many others).  We had corresponded once or twice in the past and I plan on using his model and magazine "how-to article" to build Dan's Bonneville roadster.  He is a superb builder.

My 2020 Alonso Indycar came. Looks perfect. I want to cut the bubbles out of the inside of the box so it gives a cleaner view.

99% of my collection is in smaller scales but I do have two gorgeous Carousel 1:18 models:
1954. Indy 500 winning Kurtis of Bill Vukovich
1973. Indy 500 second placed Eagle of Bill Vukovich II

If I add anything to my 1:18 collection it will most probably be other Carousel Kurtis cars.

If I was rich... or single. ;) 419 Euro. After some more digging around, this one is actually decently prices. Some brands go into the 1000's.

I have this same model as Afterburner:

  • A signed 1:18 scale "championship edition" model of Scott Dixon's PNC Bank-liveried 2020 Indy car (he even went out of the way to Sharpie "clag" elsewhere on the livery!)

and

  • The 2018 Dixon PNC Bank championship car, so pre-Deflector Shield. It makes for an interesting comparison.
  • The 2018 Bourdais #18 SealMaster car. All three are in superspeedway configuration.
  • and the iconic #36 1967 Spa GP winning Eagle.

They keep me company at work since there is no home man-cave.

I have tried to get et least one example of the Carousel Indycars, the version I liked the most of all of each type. I have some 8 of them nowadays.

The 500D I bought had to be the Vukovich car since I have a connection with that car after rediscovering (and help to identify) what was left of that that one in a Dutch museum.

Also have a few Replicars but wished I had a few more of those, Arie's winner to begin with.....

GreenLight

Was at Indy and got the Wheldon winner, in two versions, the first one and the In memoriam.

Was at Indy in 2016 and got myself Rossi's Winner as well as what I felt to be the best looking Chevy aerokit car, Newgarden's one.
