DOUBLE HEADER IN RIYADH!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FORMULA E NIGHT RACES ON FRIDAY & SATURDAY!

مرحبا بكم في سباق الرياض

FJ2l-Du3-Xo-AA-w-SY.jpg

FORMULA E SEASON 8 OFFICIAL THREAD

Here we are!

The fastest, most competitive & exciting season of Electric Formula Racing is about to start in the dusty streets of Ryadh.

One final season with the Gen 2 package, but pushed to the limits: more power in the races, more efficiency needed and a brand new qualifying format that will provide us a proper Championship Fight!

Also, new faces in the Paddock, with the arrival of new high caliber drivers: the Italian Jesus himself,  Antonio Giovinazzi, the rising U.S.A star Oliver Askew & the sheer unpredictability of Daniel Ticktum!
We'll discuss it all here in the Race Thread.

Fasten your seatbelts, adjust your kW output: it's going to be quite a ride this season.

The Swan's Song of the Generation 2, this is Formula E!

LAST TIME AROUND IN RIYADH
Monumental crashes & Missle threats!

-----------------------------------

Last time in Riyadh was quite a ride!

The First ever Night race in Formula E was won in a dominant fashion by Nyck De Vries of Mercedes, who also grabbed pole position.

The talented dutch controlled the race from lap 1 to the chequered, defending well against Pascal Wehrlein (Porsche) & Renè Rast (Audi).

It was one hell of a performance from De Vries & Mercedes, who also dominated Free Practice.

A clear sign to the competition, for a driver that delivered most of the weekends, taking his first World Championship in Berlin.

1000119.jpg

Race 2, however, was bonkers!

Drama started as soon as FP1, with Edoardo Mortara (Venturi) losing the brakes in Turn 1 due to an electrical glitch on his Mercedes Power Unit's Brake by Wire system.
Mortara couldn't stop the car, and slammed hard into the escape route, hurting his knees.

After that incident, the Mercedes powertrain was put under investigation by the FIA stewards, and they were forced to change some faulty parameters that led to Mortara's shunt.
The operation required time, so all the Mercedes powered cars were forced to sit out of quali!

The Race itself was even more dramatic!

Sam Bird & Robin Frijns were battling hard for the lead of the race, behind plenty of crashes required the intervention of the Safety Car.

Buemi was in the wall, rookie Jake Dennis was taken out by Pascal Wehrlein, many contacts in Turn 1.

But the scariest crash was not showed on TV: Alex Lynn (Mahindra) tried a late dive on the inside while fighting Mitch Evans (Jaguar).

The Kiwi closed the door, and Lynn went on for a Rollercoster ride in full Mark Webber fashion.

The Mahindra slid across the escape road in Turn 1, and smashed hard into the Tec Pro barriers.
Luckily, Lynn was totally unhurt!

dhrmefpi3ydev10tg8qq.jpg

But the Drama didn't end there: some missles were intercepted above Riyadh

"Multiple explosions were heard and the night skies above Saudi Arabia’s capital, Riyadh, lit up with bright flashes on Saturday as a Saudi-led military coalition announced the thwarting of a missile attack that it blamed on Yemen’s Houthi rebels.”

Talking about dodging a bullet!

Let's hope for a more relaxed setting this time around!

THE AD-DIRIYAH FORMULA E CIRCUIT
ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT TRACKS!

-----------------------------------

Introduced during Season 5 of Formula E, the Ad Diriyah Street Circuit has become one of Formula E's iconic tracks.

This track offers some unique features: the road follows the natural profile of the dunes around the old city of Diriyah, so you'll see plenty of elevation changes during the lap!
The track is located around the Old City of Ad-Diriyah: lights are placed on the old monuments during the Night Race, creating beautiful visual choerographies.

13-c05-nov17-01209-web.jpg

The trademark section of Riyadh is the spectacular Up-Down Sector 2, with fast & blind kinks where you have to throw the car in at high speeds!

Best overtaking spot is for sure Turn 18, a medium speed chicane that always provided most of the track's action

Circuit had some minor tweaks last season, including a straighter Turn 9-10 section.

This year, the track has been totally resurfaced.
We'll see how this will affect the grip & the lap times.

TRACK RECORD:

1'07''294 - Robin Frijns [Envision Virgin]

Ad-Diriyah18.29dbb6ad5efc5c8d641573665b9

But we know, best way to learn a track is to watch some onboards!

And here they are!

THE NEW QUALIFYING FORMAT
A GAME CHANGER!

-----------------------------------

A vocal request by drivers & team principal after a chaotic random Season 7 was to change the quali format towards a more Fair System.

So, here it is!

Overall, quite a simple format, and could be effective & much more merithocratic!

The new format has been tested in Valencia: it will be a fast paced session, with very little breaks in between the duels.
A New TV Graphic will show the micro sectors & real time comparisons during the Duels.

quali-16x9.jpg

MORE RACE POWER!
MORE FUN!

-----------------------------------

Another major tweak compared to last season is the Race Power output levels!

This year we're going up by 20 kW: race pace is now 220 kW and the Attack Modes will push the cars to 250 kW.

This means, we'll often see the cars on track lapping on Qualification Pace: this will lead to more drama, cars more on the limit, drivers really pushing in some parts of the race.

In other stages of the races tho, more lift & coast will be required in order to complete the 45 minutes of racing.

We could see quite different race strategies & approaches, this should make the races even more lively!

slider-image.jpg

NEW "EXTRA TIME" RULE!
MORE RACING!

-----------------------------------

Yet another welcomed change!

No more energy detraction! (see the Valencia fiasco)

Instead, for every minute spent behind the safety car or under full course yellow, 45 seconds will be added to the standard race time of 45 minutes + one lap.

This will be done up to the end of the 41st minute of the race and will be capped at 10 minutes.

So.. don't worry if a Safety Car comes in!
If the interruption comes before minute 41 of racing, time will be added at the end of the race, up to 10 minutes extension!

Ah, talking about the Safety Car...

This Porsche Taycan Turbo S will replace the Mini Electric.

Porsche-Taycan-safety-car-Formula-E-10.j

THE 2022 FORMULA E LINEUP
NEW FACES, BIG CHANGES!

-----------------------------------

With the departure of Audi, 22 cars remains on the Formula E Grid!

More than enough to put on a great show, isn't it?  :smoking:

This year, three new faces joins the Electric Paddock.
Three different stories, three different prospects:

Antonio Giovinazzi enters FE with Dragon Racing.

The Italian star hopes to prove his talent once again on a more leveled field: having said that, the limited amount of testing and the inconsistent performance of the Penske package could translate into a steep learning curve for the Italian Jesus.

Oliver Askew joins Avalanche Andretti (supplied with BMW engines).

The Young American's talent is crystal clear: winner of the IndyLights in 2019, Askew looked like the best rookie in terms of pace in the Valencia Pre-Season testing.

Will Askew confirm the early promises and deliver a Rookie of The Season campaign?

7d2754b0-5220-11ec-9dec-ee9c62dc7ee8-120

Daniel Ticktum joins NIO 333!

Quite a last minute signing: Ticktum made his debut in the Valencia Pre-Season Testing with NIO: some technical problems ruined his first day of testing, but the englishman managed to put in a decent amount of running in the last few days.

We know the kid has talent, and thrives on street circuits: you don't win Macau twice if you're talentless.

Now the big question is:

Will Ticktum get Redemption or go Full Villain ?

Photo4_s.r.l._1002385.jpg

But there's more!!

Major shakeups happened in the Mahindra, Nissan & Venturi lineups!

Oliver Rowland left Nissan to Join Mahindra, alongside Alexander Sims.
Max Gunther joined Nissan, leaving BMW Andretti. He's going to drive alongside Seb Buemi.

Lucas Di Grassi jumped from the sinking Audi boat towards Venturi!

Also, AUDI left FE as a Factory team, but it's still present as the Engine Supplier for Envision Virgin Racing!

Here it is the 2022 LINEUP, enjoy this Spotter Guide!    :smoking:  :smoking:

Gamer23 keeps raising the level in our forum - fantastic my friend.

I am hyped for this weekend, it'll be a nice chance to relax after a very busy month for me. Although I am kinda done with Saudi after Jeddah GP and Dakar, but this championship deserves it. Will be here for the races with y'all.

Really looking forward to this weekend. The new qualifying format will really improve Formula e.

Last year's Ad Diriyah weekend was one of the most farcical I have ever seen in motorsport, but hopefully the sport has learnt from its mistakes and will be considerably better in season 8.

Are the cars divided into groups A and B after Q1 to ensure that the fastest, 3rd fastest etc. are in group A while the 2nd fastest etc, are in group B?

What are the expectations for this season? I expect a title fight between Mercedes and Venturi again with either of those four guys capable of winning the championship. Think Jaguar and Envision will be close behind and DS Techeetah not far away either. Biggest disappointment? Probably Porsche and Nissan I think.

I actually think attack mode is one of the best features of Formula e. People tend to expect it to be awful because it seems similar to fanboost (which is awful), but the attack mode is a great strategy element of the series that makes the races more exciting without being unfair.

Not sure if i understood the question, but the best driver from group A fights the fourth fastest of Group B, the 2nd fastest of group A goes with the 3rd fastest of group B ecc.

Well, paddock rumors suggests that Mercedes made a step forward in terms of race pace (220 kW) compared to the rest, at least in Valencia.

But who knows, testing is testing.

I expect Porsche to be in the mix this season, they showed flashes of brilliance last season (Mexico) but they were often erratic, both the team management & the drivers.

I also expect Avalanche Andretti to be in the mix for the title fight, along with Jaguar & possibly Techeetah

It's wide open!  :smoking:

Dragon & NIO looks like the backmarkers again, that's maybe the only certainity.

Thanks -- the graphics posted in the OP gave the impression that group 1 would see the 1st, 3rd, 5th etc. quickest times overall from the first round of qualifying, while group 2 would see the 2nd, 4th, 6th etc.  I presumed that groups 1 and 2 were populated retrospectively, as, if you did it beforehand, you couldn't know that the quickest driver overall would be in group 1, the second-quickest in group 2 etc.

Some comments from Jaguar team principle James Barclay on the new qualifying format:

"I think we'll see more authenticity coming out in the results," said Barclay.

"I think we will see, though, is that we didn't need to artificially manufacture anything. And I think we have a sport now, you look at the quality of the drivers, the teams, the technology and the equipment we're putting on track.

"And we saw the Valencia times, two tenths were separating nearly 18 cars. So we don't need anything artificial. I think true sport isn't about having anything artificial. So it's a move towards that, which I think is important."

What a lovely FP1!

The new season of Formula E starts with a Bang as Championship Defender Nyck De Vries smashes into the wall in the opening minutes of the session.
FP1 over for him, basically zero mileage completed.

Drama!

FKHq1-Il-UUAUO7b-G.jpg

Track very dirty, quite slower than last season's FP1, meant that the drivers had to be extremely precise behind the wheel in the fast sections.

The New Attack Mode power output (250 KW) translated in a lot of full power runs, quite a different scenery compared to the previous seasons.

This season we'll see the drivers pushing most of the times in practice, wich is good.

At the end of an action packed 30 minutes, Oliver Rowland took the lead in his new red Mahindra, ahead of Da Costa (Techeetah) & Dennis (Andretti)

Best of the Rookie is the street master himself, Daniel Ticktum, under a second from the lead with a very good P13.

Giovinazzi & Askew struggled more in terms of raw pace, slotting in P20 & P21.

Early days, but the brit of NIO333 looked solid out there.

Here it is a recap of the session times.

Rowland leads!

The Techeetahs looked fast today, with two cars in the Top 5.

Jake Dennis, the extraordinary 2021 rookie slots in P3, with a very fast qualifying simulation attempt at the end for Andretti.

No Factory Mercedes in Top 10: that was mostly due to Vandoorne picking up traffic in his last qualifying simulation.

I'm intrigued to see how the new qualifying format works tomorrow, the old one did not work well last season.

Saturday race should be between 17:00 - 18:00 UK time whilst the Daytona 24 will start rolling at 18:30 for an 18:40 start so all good and no clash.

Live YouTube captions need some work...

Live youtube captions are one of the best parts of motorsports.  French GT4 has them in English, but it's no English I've ever heard...

Thanks Ben.

Good to see C4 have been promoting their FE coverage on the main channel, something BBC rarely if ever did.

Not keen on the paintjob on the Andretti.. too matt and too wishy-washy red. At least it differentiates it from the Mahindra and Nissan though!
