I'm now mainly a half hearted follower of F1; and going by the coverage on Twitter, I presumed this was a test - it looks like a testing session. To call it a 'shakedown' is telling people it's raining, when you're pi55ing down their leg......

It's pretty disingenuous, and sums up modern F1.

I saw a small spat/disagreement on Twitter involving Darren Cox & the RadioLeMans over the TV coverage, or lack of.

Going back, I recall a test back in 1996, when Jordan topped the time sheets - and shortly gained backing from B&H.....and then had a disappointing season.

If people enjoy not seeing things from the test - don't watch it. It doesn't mean that others don't want to see it.

It was generally seen as a step forward when they started televising testing - not sure that the 'we never used to have it' argument works, to be honest...it's a step back. We never used to have coverage of free practice sessions in the UK, I think that there would be uproar now if Sky stopped showing it.

If Bahrain hadn't stumped up cash, there would be wall to wall coverage at Barcelona covering these new cars, make no mistake.

Personally I only tend to dip in and out of testing coverage, I find it quite boring to watch for long periods of time...but that doesn't mean that there shouldn't be coverage for people who enjoy it (I'm sure the same goes for FP sessions for a lot of people).

Well, to be fair, i have seen fom/liberty calling this a shakedown only on the day they annoucend it. Since then, they've called it pre test session, track session whatever. But the term shakedown quickly disappeared.

They took off with a flyer none the less. Brundle Airways is still going strong at Albert Park.

Because everyone in their right mind knew this wasnt simply a shakedown.

We'll get 3 days of full coverage from the Bahrain test. This controversy is way overblown.

It's probably because it's a change, and F1's explanations didn't make sense. Nobody likes to feel lied to or that something they used to have has been taken away.

Unless he feels that this event should not be taking place and they should have just continued with official pre-season testing in Bahrain.

Whether behind closed doors or not, that's a decision the sport are entitled to make though. And just because it is behind closed doesn't mean someone is more likely to be killed, which it seemed like they are implying.

Yes, i get that (partly cause live tv of tests is really recent), but moan about the product then, not the name.

Oh, I'm not disagreeing with the sentiment (far from it). But, technically, the more times a driver jumps into a car, the more likely they are to be killed in that car. Or to put it another way, if they never get into the car, they cannot be killed in it.

True, but those odds don't change just because the doors are shut. The teams want to test, and given the chance most would do a lot more.

Sky F1 aren't dicking about. Their show this evening is entitled "Todays Testing Wrap" - A review of the opening day of Formula 1's 2022 pre-season testing.

Quoting you as you are the last post about it.

But I think the original meaning wasn't that the test pre season something event is more dangerous in itself. However, that the WWE-route that F1 is heading towards is more dangerous.

Ok, in what way have they made things more dangerous? AFAIA the safety standards in place are the same as always.

I have no idea what you mean by safety. If they had a commercial agreement with Bahrain to host the "pre-season test" then afterwards the teams pushed for an extra 3-days ahead of that, and the common ground was not to televise it....then what's the issue?

This is like watching testing for fans from around 5 years ago. I prefer this approach to the "televise everything".

I cannot fathom how safety is even a topic of conversation.

I am not even remotely questioning safety. My post has nothing to do with that.

This WWE version of F1 is not sport. It is purely entertainment for profit. It is one thing for drivers to risk their lives and limbs for glory on the racetrack. But I hope nobody ever dies in this WWE-F1, which is driving round in circles for the pure purpose of creating "a show". Driving fast cars carries risks whether it is for "the show" or for a sporting race.

If you don't want to watch televised testing, then choose not to watch it rather than take it away from those who enjoyed and benefitted from the coverage.
