Most are hideous now.

But as always with Max, it will change umpteen times through the season anyway.  He had an orange one that was decent- should have stuck with that.

Nice to see the No.1 on there at least, and he is sticking with Schuberth.

Blithering mess, like most modern lids.

Don't think it helps he has to have Red Bull branding splashed all over it. The quality of Vettel's helmet deisgned improved dramatically as soon as he went to Ferrari.

Never understood the red bull branding. and sponsors. Lids should be a drivers personal choice and design

Design wise it is not at all the best helmet out there. But the touches done by adding a world championship star and the #1 is nice to see. Otherwise, as said before in a fitting manner, it is a blithering mess.

There, I fixed it.

You didn't. It'd still be hideous. And I'm not really a fan of him detailing "1" on his lid.

Use it on the car of course, that's tradition. On your lid though is just pompous.

Hmm, so Hamilton adding his number 44 to his lid is also not done? Same as all the other drivers who are adding their racing numbers to their helmets?

It's not the same imo. That's a personal number for Hamilton and others. It's just not to my taste, I appreciate others will feel different. It has it's place on the World Champions car but on his helmet? I can't remember a previous World Champion putting #1 on their helmet but I could be mistaken.

I grew to like Verstappens helmet a bit. It’s definitely not the worst out there, and the basic concept is quite nice, in fact it could be quite iconic if simplified and without red bull branding.

I did prefer red to gold though, looked more striking.

I’m pretty sure there is a current guidance that your number must be on your helmet somewhere, so using that as a stick to attack Verstappen is crass

That's putrid and my opinion on the number is no different. I don't like it. But I was mistaken so thanks for pointing that out.

My opinion has nothing to do with Verstappen, I'd say the same for any driver. But you keep making assumptions all the same.

Why? His driver number is '1' this season and every driver puts their number on their helmet.

Moreover, he has no choice really.

7.4.2 Each car will carry the race number of its driver as published by the FIA at the beginning of the season or the race number that has been allocated to his replacement under Article 3.12.2©. This number must be clearly visible from the front of the car and on the driver’s crash helmet

How can it be "pompous" if it's a rule? We all know you heavily dislike Max, so no need to hide it.

2022 regulations:

Each car will carry the race number of its driver as published by the FIA at the beginning of the season or the race number that has been allocated to his replacement under Article 3.12.2©. This number must be clearly visible from the front of the car and on the driver’s crash helmet.

It's quite small on the back spoiler, it's not like the number one is splattered all over the helmet.

Edit: Too slow.

Won't this change in a few races when Max needs to sell more collector helmets and minis?

Even with the obligatory Red Bull logo, you could still have a decent design using block colours. Verstappen's lid has a faded henna tattoo vibe about it. It won't be remembered as a classic.

I don't think he really *needs* to. :drunk:

I have this 1:43 limited edition Minichamps Toro Rosso and I see the current bid on an auction site for the same item is €560 with a day to go. So Those collector things work.

But as far as I know the rule that you can only have one helmet livery change per season is back for 2022.

Of all the Formula One drivers out there, I doubt anyone has a truly iconic lid like the examples of Hakkinen, Schumacher and Senna.

This.

99% of modern lids are absolute tripe. Mich Schumacher when he used the classic lid of his fathers was the best of the lot last year.

It's certainly done nowadays but can you imagine Mansell, Senna or Prost having a n1 plastered on their lid?   Makes you realise how crass it actually is. But then again, if you basically have no proper helmet design it's understandable. Tbf in Maxs' case it is very small and on the back, and it seems to be in the rules to have the number on the helmet for some reason. No idea why, as you can't see the bloody thing anyway.

He's done it in true modern F1 tradition.

In the days of Mansell and Senna they stuck with one design.  I get the impression there must be a squad of designers now, who all have their own input on all helmets, hence the consistent mess with all the same swooshes, layering and odd shapes.

In exchange for 30-40 million a year, I suspect the drivers don't put up much resistance....

This was pretty much my point which obviously I conveyed horribly. And I also hadn't realised it's a regulation to display your number on your helmet. It's all very cheap and tacky and displaying/having to display #1 is crass.

Well Verstappen did everything he could to just comply with the regulations, it’s just a very tiny #1 on the spoiler, I hope it’s legal, lol.

It was nostalgic, yes. And that I have to agree that it was the best helmet out there last year, is a bit depressing isn't it?

I feel sorry for him actually. Because you're right, the way he's displaying it... it looks like he's uncomfortable with it. And I hadn't realised Hamilton, Vettel had done it previously. Shows how closely I look at the helmets! But they look terrible all the same. Numbers shouldn't be near a helmet.

Nothing wrong with the world champion displaying number 1. They've worked their whole life for the number 1 with little chance of succeeding. When they finally pull it off, they have to hide it like its something to be embarrassed about!? Racing is all about beating your competitors, being the best. Its not about feeling sorry for the ones who lost out. There is only one winner.

Verstappen's is just way too messy. Should just get rid of everything except the 'moustache'. Problem is that even if you have a simple colour scheme like Vettel, the sponsors plaster their logos all over it until it looks cluttered anyway.
